Big Games of 2011: The Man Behind DC Universe Online

Sony Online Entertainment's Christopher Cao talks about the new MMO action game
One of the big games of 2011 has been unleashed. Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) has released the first cross-platform MMO game with DC Universe Online (DCUO. With the success of recent Warner Bros. movies like The Dark Knight, gamers will be able to work with DC Comics characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman in DCUO on both PlayStation 3 and PC. Christopher Cao, Game Director for Sony Online Entertainment, talks about the new game.

“Creating DC Universe Online has been a massive undertaking,” said Cao. “We’re grateful to our beta players for providing us invaluable feedback in these final stages that has enabled us to put the finishing touches on a fun and exciting experience.”

“In much the same way that DCUO was inspired by the comics, we hope that the stories, characters, and even the players of the game will in turn inspire future elements of DC,” continued Cao. “DCUO is the first time that the DC Universe has been brought to life as a persistent, thriving world that thousands of players can share.  It’s the first time DC fans have been able to make their own heroes and villains and join the iconic cast of characters.  And, no doubt, it will act as a source of inspiration for many other things to come.”

As a traditional action-based MMO that combines fast-paced, twitch-based combat with an interactive physics system to deliver a new and unique gameplay experience, DC Universe Online brings the DC Universe to life, allowing players to create their own superheroes - or villains - and join forces with their favorite DC Comics characters such as Superman , Batman; and The Joker to aid in saving – or destroying – the universe.

“We’ve been lucky enough on DCUO to be able to tap directly into the creative genius at DC,” added Cao. “The legendary comic book artist Jim Lee is our Executive Creative Director, and he’s been with us through all five years of development.  Likewise, both Geoff Johns and Marv Wolfman have contributed as writers and guides, helping us set the foundation for the game.  The collaboration has been unparalleled and is a key reason for our shared success.”

DC Universe Online retails for $60 for PS3 and $50 for PC. The game includes one 30-day game membership, with monthly subscriptions available thereafter for $15.  For customers playing the PC version of the game,DCUO will be included in SOE’s all-in-one Station Access subscription. Sony Online Entertainment expects to update the game regularly with new episodes featuring iconic DC Comics characters, new instances and major in-game events.
