In professional wrestling, fans call "unlikely match-ups" dream matches. They take superstars who were in their prime and pit them against superstars of today. In the fighting game genre, fans take franchises such as Street Fighter and imagine how characters in the game would fair against another franchise, such as Tekken. Lucky for those fans, Namco and Capcom have partnered together to bring that fantasy to reality with Street Fighter X Tekken.
If you can recall the first moment you played each of the respective games (Street Fighter II in the arcade at the mall, Tekken 2 at my cousin's Thanksgiving dinner), pay attention you must. Think of it like Freddy vs Jason, but with the potential to actually be good.
If the epic clash at EVO 2010 in Las Vegas between Yoshihori Ono and Katsuhiro Harada wasn't enough to relay the potential for epicness this game has, think of the dream match-ups. M. Bison vs King, Ryu vs Kayuza, Chun-Li vs Nina. The possibilites are endless. The roster hasn't been finalzied yet, but from the demo footage we've seen appearances from Ken, Ryu, Chun-Li, Ken, Guile, Abel, King, Nina,Kazuya, Bob and Craig. Gameplay is rumored to be reminsicent of Tekken Tag Tournament--meaning that players select two fighters and the individual with has a character with zero health loses the round.
Street Fighter X Tekken is being developed by Capcom and will likely have fighting mechanics similar to Street Fighter IV, while Tekken X Street Fighter, being developed by Namco will feel more like Tekken. There are rumors that each game will have the option to switch between Street Fighter's six-button layout and Tekken's four-button layout. Sreet Fighter X Tekken is slated for release sometime in 2011--check out the screenshots below even though it will likely lead to unmanageable disappointment that it is not out now.
