Big Games of 2011: New Twisted Metal Screenshots

Enough Eye Candy To Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

Twisted Metal is one of those amazing Sony franchises from back in the PSone era. It was the quintessential multiplayer title--I recall going to friends' houses--with 10 of us crowded around the system camped out on a rooftop detonating buildings from afar with Axel in Twisted Metal 2. Twisted Metal 3 and 4 weren't the greatest moments in the franchise due to the change from now Incognito Studios to Sony's 989 studios, but Twisted Metal: Black on the PS2 steered the series back in the proper direction. Since, we've seen appearances on the PSP with Twisted Metal: Head On and re-releases of Twisted Metal installments on the PSN. Now it's time for Twisted Metal to bring its vehicular carnage to the PS3.

Announced at E3 2010 with a huge on-stage spectacle by David Jaffe, Twisted Metal is the true follow-up to Twisted Metal Black. The game itself as Jaffe described has quite the history in development. First, it was going to be Twisted Metal: Harbor City--it was unfortunately canned. Afterwards, Jaffe was developing a PSN network title that was multiplayer only, in which Sony suggested to move the title to full retail. Jaffe still had a multiplayer only game in mind to which at the behest of Sony eventually got expanded to include a single player mode.

Part of playing Twisted Metal is seeing the crazy stories behind these characters--remember in Twisted Metal 2 where each character got their own wish at the end of the game? Awesome. You really got to know the backstory behind these characters--why they are who they are, and why their vehicle is designed to fit their personality. We've seen attempt after attempt of people trying to be Twisted Metal (anyone remember WWE Crush Hour? yeesh), but there is truly only one king of vehicle combat.

Twisted Metal is slated to be released exclusively on the PS3 on October 4th 2011. Check out some screenshots below.
