Dragon Quest X, long since confirmed to be a Wii title, has had a couple other surprising announcements at a recent Square Enix conference. Not only will the game be the first true Online RPG in the series, but it will also have a version released for both the Wii and Wii U. Both had been rumored, but this is the first official confirmation of these facts. More details after the jump.
As stated, Dragon Quest X will be an Online RPG. While players can experience the first few hours of the game offline, most of the content afterwords requires an internet connection. Players still can play the entire game solo, but it's very much geared towards a multiplayer experience. Players will form parties with others and coexist in an online world. Since this is true of both versions of the game, the Wii version will, of course, be using friend codes.
More worrying than friend codes, however, is the possibility of a usage fee, standard for most MMOs. On the game's site, the price and a usage fee are listed seperately and both are listed as TBA.

The game will let players create five characters and features five different races to play as. There are also other features such as a new combat system for the series and the ability to alchemize items and gear. The control scheme allows for classic controller, Wii remote and nunchuck, as well as USB Keyboard. There's also talk of integrated 3DS functionality via Spot Pass.
At this time, no details have been released about the game's story.
Dragon Quest X is set for a 2012 release date.
