When it came out a few years ago, Lego Batman struck a chord with both avid comic book fans and younger players, introducing the fun Lego dynamic to the DC Comics universe and allowing players to fight for both good and evil. The game became an instant hit, so it should be no surprise that WB Games has announced a sequel, with Travellers Tales once again handling development. What is surprising, though, is that the action isn't just limited to the Dark Knight's universe this time around.
Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes will introduce several Superfriends to help out the Caped Crusader, along with several supervillains who will try to bring the blocky Gotham City to its knees. According to the press release, "In LEGO Batman 2, the Dynamic Duo of Batman and Robin join other famous super heroes from the DC Universe including Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern to save Gotham City from destruction at the hands of the notorious villains Lex Luthor and the Joker."
The game should span across several missions, allowing players to team up together in co-op fashion to solve puzzles, find hidden goodies and beat baddies to smithereens. No, literally -- they break up into piles of Lego blocks as you beat them up. That's what worked so well in the original Lego Batman, so why not?
It's yet to be seen if the action will ever stray out of Gotham City and into other super locales, such as the Justice League or Superman's home base of Metropolis. But it'll be interesting, nevertheless, and fans of all ages should be thrilled by the improvements to the in-game engine, and all the new secrets/characters to be found. You might even like playing as Aquaman...who knows?
"LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes further extends and combines both the Batman and LEGO videogame experiences to create very fun gameplay," said Samantha Ryan, SVP of Development and Production at WB. "Fans of all ages are going to enjoy the action and light hearted humor that TT Games and LEGO provide."
Lego Batman 2 will also see a simultaneous release across multiple platforms when it comes out, including the PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, OnLive Game Service, Wii and PC. A Wii U release hasn't been announced yet, but the possibility hasn't been ruled out, since this would obviously be a big franchise for it.
Look for impressions from Lego Batman 2 very soon. And pray that the Lego version of Wonder Woman is rather shapely...
