CTIA 2011: Samsung Announces New Dual Core Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 Tablets

Samsung add two new tablets to its Galaxy Tab tablet family

ORLANDO, Florida -- The CTIA Wireless 2011 officially opened today with a bang as Samsung announced two new Galaxy Tab tablets, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9, to its growing line of tablets. In its on-stage presentation, Samsung showed different users favoring different sizes based on their needs and lifestyles. With the announcement, Samsung now has the most comprehensive size range of tablets with a 7, 8.9 and 10 inch tablets. Samsung highlighter the sizes with a huge 3D sign in front of the CTIA trade show entrance. Samsung has been one of the more successful competitors to Apple's iPad and iPad 2 in the hot and growing tablet space.

 

Samsung announced that the Galaxy Tab 10.1, first announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, was already new and improved with even better specs. The Tab 10.1 will be available initially with 4G HSPA+ with up to 21 Mbps download speeds and will be available later this year for the Verizon's 4G LTE and Sprint/Clear's 4G WiMax mobile networks. The specs of the Tab 10.1 include a 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 WXGA multi-touch touchscreen display, dual band 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi wireless, 1 GHz dual core processor, probably a NVIDIA Tegra 2 though not confirmed, 16GB of flash memory and a 6,860 mAH battery. The Tab 10.1 is also thinner than the iPad 2 at 8.6mm thick and will with 1.31 lbs., Samsung said. The Tab 8.9 has similar specs to the Tab 10.1 but with a smaller 8.9-inch 1280 x 800 WXGA display and a weight of 1.03 lbs. The Tab 8.9 also comes with a large 6,000 mAH battery.

Among the accessories, Samsung showed off its Sound Station dock with a big speaker around back. and another Desk Dock model with HDMI-out. They also showed a SD card accessory for plugging in SD flash cards to transfer photos and data from a digital camera and USB input and output, which will allow you to plug in USB flash and hard drives to the tablet. Apple has stayed away from offering input and output options for their iPads.

Samsung also showcased a revamped TouchWiz 4.0 UX user interface that goes on top of the Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb mobile operating system and a new Reader Hub book store where Tab users can purchase and download e-books for their Tabs. For enterprise customer, the Tabs will fature Exchange ActiveSync which will allow users to get push email from corporate Microsoft Exchange Servers.

Samsung originally launched the 7-inch Galaxy Tab on all four major U.S. carriers last year to great fanfare. The tablet was well received and Samsung had said it had shipped more than a million Galaxy Tabs.

The WiFi Tab 10.1 will be available June 8th with the the 16GB version costing $499 and the 32GB $599. The Tab 8.9 is $469 and $569 will be 16GB and 32GB, respectively, and will ship "sometime in the summer."
