PopCap Games, developers of such popular titles as Bejeweled and Plants Vs Zombies, has just been acquired by EA, one of the leading publishers in the game market. EA has already been focusing more on the casual market, with such games as Risk: FACTIONS and a host of iPad and mobile games they've published. With this in mind, and the recent rumors that PopCap Games was being bought by an unnamed group, this announcement makes a lot of sense.
Says EA's CEO, John Riccitiello , "EA and PopCap are a compelling combination. PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA's global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels."
PopCap games already publishes games for PC and many mobile platforms, and it seems EA plans to bring their games to even more consoles, a mutually beneficial arrangement.
"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games. By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience," said PopCap's CEO, David Roberts
EA is paying roughly $650 million in cash and $100 million in shares of EA common stock, the latter of which will go to key PopCap stockholders.
