Fox News, a network that continuously tries to push coverage on news stories that border into the nonsensical, has done it again. This time, a segment aired that accuses video games of trying to push an environmental message a bit too hard on kids. Clayton Morris and online radio host TJ McCormack seem to think they're damaging them. Um...sure.
We've included the video clip below, which has Morris and McCormack explaining how pushing environmental themes on kids stop them from having fun. One example is Fate of the World, an online game where players have to balance certain issues around the planet. Sim City also gets mentioned, and Sony's innovative PS3 game Flower is also mentioned. Watch it for yourself.
In a nutshell, these guys think that the "green police" are pushing their in-game content a little too far, stating that a "liberal agenda" has emerged as a result. Scare tactics and guilt are also discussed, as they think these games push negativity on those who don't complete the tasks effectively.
"These guys have kids with sweaty palms, and freaking out that they're not going to kill a bunch of virtual polar bears...virtual polar bears!" said McCormack in his little tirade. "It's also boring. It's also boring! These are not games, there's a game that teaches kids how to do a tad sale! Recyclables!"
The statements have gotten some ire from the game community, but, really, guys, you can only take these with such a grain of salt. We're talking about a guy like McCormack who simply doesn't "get" the game industry, or what Thatgamecompany was going for when it created Flower a couple of years back. Is there an environmental message? Yeah, we can see that. But an "agenda"? Scare tactics? Some folks have a little too much time on their hands at Fox.
What's next? Pac-Man promoting cannibalism?
