Hands-on: Modern Warfare 3's Spec Ops Is Actually Quite Fun

It's more than just zombies that can shoot back
Certainly one of the biggest games of the year will be Modern Warfare 3. With Call of Duty's track record of hitting huge sales numbers, how could it not be? The third installment of the Modern Warfare series looks to be the biggest as the battle is being brought to some of the world's biggest cities such as New York, Paris, and London. It will also feature a brand-new Survival mode within Spec Ops, taking the Zombies mode from previous games, but giving the enemies guns so they can fight back. After getting a chance to play Survival mode, it really is a much more fun experience, and a little tougher too.

Activision recently held a preview event for Modern Warfare 3, showing off a portion of the single-player campaign and one map from Spec Ops Survival mode. One of the missions from the single-player campaign was the mission being shown off during Microsoft's E3 press conference. But the second mission that they had was one that was shown at E3, but only to a select few.

The mystery mission is called "Mind the Gap" and it takes place in London. The mission begins with a brief stealth sequence, taking out a few enemies on the way over to a truck that supposedly houses deadly weapons. Eventually, you'll find yourself in a skirmish at a loading area of a warehouse. Things only get crazier as a helicopter makes its way over to the area to give you some aerial support. The mission then comes to an exhilerating conclusion as the last part takes place within London's subway system. Here, you ride in a Jeep as you chase down a subway train filled with terrorists. This section plays as a rail-shooting sequence as you simply shoot down anyone who appears in the train.

The mission was pretty neat, but it also wasn't anything really new to Modern Warfare. Plus, it was a rather short experience, only taking about 15 minutes to complete on its normal difficulty. If you liked the way missions played out in Modern Warfare 2, certainly the campaign in Modern Warfare 3 won't disappoint.

In addition to some of the single-player campaign, I got the chance to play Spec Ops Survival mode. Here, you could say that the game is much like Zombies mode from Call of Duty: Black Ops, but that still doesn't really say it all. Yes, you will be fighting regular enemies with guns, but there is a larger variety of enemies this time around.

Some of the enemies that you encounter will have C4 strapped to them, causing it to explode a few seconds after death. Even the dogs you face could have C4 strapped onto them as well! In some of the rounds, you could face juggernauts who have extra heavy armor, a riot shield, and a powerful machine gun. Enemies aren't limited to just the ground, though. Sometimes, you may have to fight off enemy helicopters and Harriers. At first, the enemy waves will consist of regular enemies, but in later rounds combinations of vehicles, juggernauts, and other enemies will spawn, causing absolute mayhem!
