New York Jet Mark Sanchez Talks Madden

At Madden Bowl XVI, the Jets rookie star took a timeout to talk about videogames

MIAMI, Florida – A lot has changed for New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez in a year. At last year’s Madden Bowl, the NCAA Football 10 cover athlete was a rookie heading to the Big Apple to fill Brett Favre’s shoes. This year in South Beach, the quarterback took the wildcard Jets to the AFC Championship Game and was just one win away from playing in Super Bowl XLIV. Sanchez chimed in on the Madden Bowl and talked about his own Madden memories at The Clevelander Hotel.

What are your thoughts on how far the Madden game has come today?

It's grown and you know with the advances in technology, it's gotten even bigger and better and more realistic. When you see the guys on the videogame with their breath coming out in cold weather in the Steeler's Stadium with the banks of snow on the side. I remember Madden '94 and I mean, that was when you could play with the great teams like Walter Peyton's team, the '85 Bears and all that, so that was fun for me on Sega Genesis. I used to play that. So it's come a long way since that and it's only gotten better.

How good are you at the Madden game?

I'm not great. I can hold my own though. I'll be all right.

What was it like to see yourself in Madden NFL 10 this year?

I think more than anything that's one of the things that my family is really excited about and to see their joy and excitement about that really fires me up. You know, that's something that's special to have your little cousin call or text you, like, “Dude, I'm playing with you in the NFL on the videogame.” That's really special. So it's fun.

Before being on the cover of NCAA Football 10, how popular was that game at USC?

Oh, my God. NCAA and Madden is all the guys play. And then it was just Rock Band, but that's all you hear in the locker room, who is good at Madden, who is good at this or that, so that's a lot of smack talk about that.

Did you have more time to play games in college versus the NFL?

Definitely. There was a lot of playbook studying. I focused on that more than on the videogames. As much as I like to play videogames, it's important that I play well on the field or I wouldn't be in the videogame.

If you could put anything in the new Madden what would you add to it?

Oh, man, I mean it is so good. I don't know. They always come up with something. That's something for somebody else. I have no idea. It's already good.
