Nintendo Bringing Wii U To CES Show Next Month

Don't expect anything amazingly new, though.

The CES show, which is held every year in Las Vegas, is primarily held to show off the latest in gadgets and electronics, and not really considered much of a "game show", unlike the Game Developers Conference and E3.  However, some game companies still take part, just to show off how far game development has come.  And this year, Nintendo will be making a trip to the event, bringing its upcoming Wii U system with it.

In an official statement, Nintendo of America confirmed the news.  "Nintendo of America, working with the 2012 International CES management, will offer demos of the upcoming Wii U console to members of the media who did not see the system at the 2011 E3 Expo."

The E3 Expo was abuzz with demo stations last year, following the Wii U's official announcement at the press conference.  Each station showed off something new with the interlinking technology, as well as the new high-definition processing, a first for Nintendo's gaming technology.  Several third party games were also announced for the system, including Ninja Gaiden 3, Darksiders II, Aliens: Colonial Marines and a Tekken title.

However, don't expect anytihng major in terms of new content during the CES showcase.  This is merely a repeat, according to the announcement.  "Nintendo will not have a booth at CES, nor does it plan to include any games, experiences or information beyond what was available at the 2011 E3 Expo."  So if you want to book an appointment, chancs are you'll need to contact their inside PR, as you won't find them on the show floor.

This is an ideal place for Nintendo to show off its tech, but obviously it's saving the gaming side for a more major showcase, such as GDC or E3.  Those seem like the ideal places to really push the system's momentum forward.  Expect a big bonanza of Wii U coverage at E3 particularly, where Nintendo should announce a price point (possibly to confirm the rumored $600 cost) and release date, which is set for the later half of 2012.

While we're happy to see Nintendo involved with CES in some capacity, we would've liked to see some sort of exclusive.  Maybe a look at a new Mario game or something.  Oh, well, beats looking at TV's with 3D automatically built in.  You know, the ones that give you a headache...
