MIAMI, Florida – Before Super Bowl XLIV kicked off and those memorable commercials aired on Super Sunday, EA Sports held its own virtual competition with Madden Bowl XVI. Darren McFadden, a former cover athlete for EA Sports’ NCAA Football franchise, was on hand to watch the competition and mingle with fell NFL players at the Clevelander Hotel in South Beach. McFadden talks about the phenomenon that Madden Bowl has become in this exclusive interview.
What are your thoughts about how big a deal this Madden Bowl has become over the years?
I think it's a great thing just being able to bring a lot of different players together and see them compete. I wouldn't say it’s on a national stage, but being able to see them compete and see what guys do when they're not on the football field, it's a great thing.
How big a deal is being good at Madden within the pros compared to when you were in college?
I think in college it was a lot more serious. College guys just actually get pretty mad over the Madden game and in the NFL it's not as serious like it was in school.
What have you been playing lately?
For me, right now I've just been trying to relax a lot. I play Madden and now I play games like Grand Theft Auto or something just at the house hanging out.
Do you get more time to play during the off season versus during the season?
Yeah, I would say a lot more during the off season because you're not doing as much and then during the season when you get a little break you want to just rest and don't even want to do anything.
What role does the player ratings play for you guys every year when the new Madden comes out?
It's like once it comes out everybody is going to want to go on there and look at the different ratings, but to me it's like you know you're going to get rated on the game based on your performances, so it's not a full simulation of who you are. So you just have to go with it.
If you were in charge of EA Sports what would you add to Madden NFL 11?
I’d make my own strength a lot better. That would be a good one right there. But you know I feel like they've done a great job with the Madden game. Just from the times as a kid I remember playing like Madden '96 and Madden '97. When you look at those games and what they’re doing now, it’s totally different.
