Hot on the heels of Tokyo Game Show 2011 are two new trailers for Final Fantasy XIII-2, one for each version of the game. Not only are there two new trailers, but several new details about the game were revealed not only at Tokyo Game Show, but in the build-up to that conference. To watch the new trailers read on.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 follows Serah as she teams up with Noel and tries to find her sister Lightning. Noel is from a post-apocalyptic future where he's the only survivor, and he's using time travel to try and change this outcome. Lightning has become a valkyrie-esque being, serving the goddess Etro. Meanwhile, a mysterious man named Kaias, said to be Lightning's "Fated Rival," seeks to defeat her and Noel.
There's a lot going on in this sequel, including older versions of familiar characters. Snow and Hope both make appearances in the new PS3 trailer. New characters appear as well, such as a young companion to Kaias named Yuru.
It's not just the story that's new. Minigames from Chocobo racing to gambling make appearances, there are now towns to be explored, and players can use the Historia Crux system to travel to different times and locations. There are even collectables scattered throughout the various locales the player will visit. It may be one of the few direct sequels to a Final Fantasy game, but it's not resting on its laurels. The team behind it is dedicated to making an even better Final Fantasy than the one that came before it.
They've even gone to the effort to record two versions of the game's main theme, one for each version of the game. The two versions are very different takes on what is, more or less, the same song, and both versions work very well. As always, the visual presentation is top notch.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is set to release in North America January 31 of 2012 for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
