The actor is everywhere this Christmas with the TRON sequel, True Grit re-make and “SNL” hosting gig
Oscar-winning actor Jeff Bridges is everywhere this Christmas. He’s on the big screen in Disney’s TRON: Legacy, reprising his role as video game designer Kevin Flynn. He’s hosting “Saturday Night Live” and poking fun at TRON. And he’s starring alongside Matt Damon and Josh Brolin in the Cohen brothers’ re-make of the Western, True Grit. The actor took some time out of his busy schedule to talk about TRON in this exclusive video interview.
Did you hesitate for one second when they asked you to star in TRON: Legacy?
Yeah. I hesitate quite a bit before I go into something, and I was excited about the prospect of it. I felt very much like I felt when the first one came my way. And it’s that kid inside, thinking, “Oh, play a guy who gets sucked inside a computer and get to mess around with all that great cutting-edge technology.” That was great. So that brought me to this one, as well. But there was an added element of the chance to create a modern day myth having do with technology, which I think we can use in this day and age.
Are you very much into modern gadgets because you have that famous camera?
That’s an old thing. That’s like one of the oldest shutters, but you know, I don’t Tweet or do Facebook or any of that stuff. But I have a Website that I like to mess around with.
You get really to bond to get used to this sort of father son thing. Did you have any meetings together with the director to see how you’re going to handle this relationship?
Well, we had an initial lunch in Los Angeles, but we all went to Vancouver for two and a half weeks for a shooting and every day we sat there for eight hours or so hashing over the script. We had lunch together and improvised a bit to see if there’s any way we could add some inflections to a scene that was already on paper and an improvisational feel. And that was kind of the gist of it.
What was it like having that father son relationship in this movie?
I have girls personally, three daughters, but my brothers have some boys and my sister has some boys. When I look at Garrett, I can see, “Oh, yeah, he could be my son.” I could see something about him that reminds me of myself a little bit. And something about him reminds me of who I want to be.
