Lin-sanity Arrives On Xbox Live Avatar Marketplace

NBA 2K12 continues to run at a fever pitch in the second half of the shortened NBA season.  The Game of the Year edition is set to hit Best Buy store shelves next week, at a decent price of $49.99; and to help further celebrate the basketball season, Microsoft has added a new jersey to its Xbox Live Avatar line-up that New York Knicks fans in particular will take interest in.  Nope, it's not Carmelo Anthony.  It's Jeremy Lin!

Editorial: Stern, AC/DC and the Return of Rock and Roll Pinball

Getting back from CES, I expected my return to normalcy to be a little easygoing.  But then I hit this link over on one of my favorite sites and got introduced to the latest project from Stern Pinball -- a table based on the band AC/DC.  And, yep, next thing I knew, I was blaring "Back In Black" on my iTunes and wondering if this could be a possible revival in good old-fashioned rock n' roll pinball revival.

James Cameron Shows Apple Fans How Avatar Was Made

James Cameron made Avatar to take advantage of 3D technology, but the Oscar-winning filmmaker also made sure that the film would play well in 2D. And although he originally said the experience was designed for a large screen, Avatar has been a hit on mobile devices. The movie comes pre-installed on the T-Mobile Samsung Virbant Galaxy S. Now Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Lightstorm Entertainment are bringing a first-of-its-kind interactive version of the film called Avatar iTunes Extras Special Edition beginning on Tuesday, December 20. The director talks about the movie in the video below from the 3D Entertainment Summit.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Bests James Cameron’s Avatar in Race to $1 Billion

While James Cameron doesn’t have anything to worry about when it comes to the final tally of his Avatar 3D epic, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 did the director’s film in the race to $1 billion. MW3 earned $1 billion in just 16 days. It took Avatar 17 days to reach that milestone. It’s worth noting that Activision chose not to release the new game in 3D after experimenting with 3D in Black Ops last year across all platforms.

New MMO Game Based on Universal Pictures' The Thing Allows Players to Win Real Props from the Movie

James Cameron Brings AVATAR to Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide is joining forces with visionary filmmaker James Cameron and Fox Filmed Entertainment to bring the world of AVATAR to life at Disney parks. Through an exclusive agreement, Disney will partner with Cameron and producing partner Jon Landau to create themed lands that will give theme park guests the opportunity to explore the mysterious universe of AVATAR first hand. Disney plans to build the first AVATAR themed land at Walt Disney World, within the Animal Kingdom park. With its emphasis on living in harmony with nature, Animal Kingdom is a natural fit for the AVATAR stories, which share the same philosophy. Construction is expected to begin by 2013.

James Cameron and Vince Pace to Keynote 3D Entertainment Summit

Oscar-winning writer, director and producer James Cameron and business partner Vince Pace will keynote the fourth annual 3D Entertainment Summit. The event will take place Sept. 20-22 at the Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles. As part of the summit, a full day will be devoted to video games, 3D Gaming and Beyond. Cameron worked with Ubisoft to develop a 3D Avatar game, which shipped before the number one movie of all time hit theaters.

RIO Blu-ray and DVD Take Flight with 2.5 Million Copies Sold at Launch

The RIO celebration has given wing to prospects for an endless summer, with the colorful, musical family adventure from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment setting home video history as the biggest selling family title ever for an August release in its Blu-ray and DVD debut. Sales of RIO exceeded 2.5 million units in its first six days, the company announced today. Premium two-disc DVD and Blu-ray combo packs represented 40 percent of retail sales. Fox, which is also hold back on sales of Avatar in 3D, has released a Blu-ray 3D version of RIO exclusively through Best Buy. Gamers can play the Angry Birds RIO tie-in, or the THQ games based on the hit movie.

HBO Go On Consoles: Why It'll Work

Both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have their fair share of streaming services available, including NHL GameCenter (just wait till next season!), ESPN, Hulu Plus and Netflix.  But HBO is about to join the fray, as HBO CEO Jeff Bewkes has announced that the HBO Go service will be coming to consoles sometime in the near future, along with high-definition televisions.  Several users out there are complaining that this plan doesn't make much sense, but in the long run, it really does...just as long as HBO performs one small move to solidify its plans.

Harry Potter’s Record Box Office Relies on 2D Ticket Sales

Warner Bros. can’t be happy that Harry Potter is finally over. But with the final movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 breaking every box office record in site, at least it’s getting one last bang for its buck. (And that doesn’t include the upcoming Blu-ray release of the final film as well as a complete collection Blu-ray likely hitting stores just in time for Christmas.) The record ticket sales do have one major downside, theater-goers are bypassing the 3D screenings of the movie in droves. But this box office bonanza is good news for Electronic Arts, which has a brand new game on store shelves to capitalize on the theatrical rush and this fall’s home entertainment release.

Even without Avatar in 3D, Americans Purchase Over 3.5 Million Blu-ray 3D Discs

U.S. consumers purchased an estimated 1.75 million Blu-ray Disc 3D (BD3D) discs at retail during the format's first 12 months on the market, and brought home another 1.7 million units as part of hardware/software bundling deals, according to the new IHS Screen Digest report entitled “Life in 3D: BD3D's First Year of Sales,” from information and analysis provider IHS. These sales were spurred, in part, thanks to the free PlayStation 3 upgrade that turns any PS3 into a Blu-ray 3D player. The lower cost of 3D TVs from companies like Vizio is also helping sales.

James Cameron’s Titanic Sets Sail Again in 3D April 6, 2012
Oscar-winning director James Cameron is returning to the Titanic once again. After filming numerous 3D films on the sunken ship, the Avatar director is giving his Academy Award-winning film a 3D conversion. The movie will hit theaters worldwide on April 6, 2012 from Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Lightstorm Entertainment. The release marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic setting sail (April 10th).

Big Games of 2011: Sony Introduces Total Game Integration on PlayStation Home with Killzone 3
Sony Computer Entertainment America has introduced PlayStation Home’s Total Game Integration with the soon-to-be-released stereo 3d Killzone 3, providing users with unique opportunities to extend the Killzone 3 experience. Available now, the Killzone 3 Total Game Integration kicked off with the Helghast invading and destroying the PlayStation Home Central Plaza, leaving it as the last ISA stronghold.  Once in PlayStation Home, users will be able to aid in the ISA evacuation of Helghan by launching into a series of games across three different levels to gain accessories for their PlayStation Home avatar. Completion of all three levels will reward players with Unlock Points, which can be redeemed for new weapons and abilities in Guerilla Games' Killzone 3 multiplayer.

James Cameron Developing New 3D Technology for AVATAR 2 and 3 to Combat Sickness
Oscar winning director James Cameron is busy working on the script for AVATAR 2, which 20th Century Fox has slated for a December 2014 release. The director will be honored by the International 3D Society on February 9th at Grauman’s Chinese Theater with the inaugural Harold Lloyd Award, which honors outstanding achievement in 3D filmmaking and advocacy. The multiple Academy Award winner has been busy of late, producing the new 3D action film Sanctum, writing the novelization of AVATAR, along with the script for AVATAR 3, and turning Titanic into a 3D spectacle. He told the Wall Street Journal the AVATAR sequels will employ new 3D technology that will help combat the motion sickness that some audiences experience with 3D movies.

Game Over for Disney's TRON: Evolution Studio Propaganda Games
Although Walt Disney Studios’ TRON: Legacy has become a global box office smash, Disney Interactive Studios’ TRON: Evolution video games have not been able to capitalize on that success. Last year, Ubisoft’s James Cameron’s AVATAR: The Game, also had trouble reaching a mainstream audience. But for Disney, the TRON game has resulted in the closure of the Vancouver game studio, Propaganda Games. Disney already shut down production of the new Pirate of the Caribbean role-playing game last October, which was originally slated to ship this summer in tandem with the new 3D film, Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides.

 While TRON: Legacy is not breaking box office records like James Cameron’s AVATAR did last year, Disney’s 3D sequel is holding strong in 2011. CES 2011: Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer Says 8 Million Kinects Sold in First 60 Days, Announces AvatarKinect

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer took the stage at CES with his annual pre-CES keynote speech by announcing that Microsoft had sold over 8 million Kinect controllers in its first 60 days since its launch and also introduced AvatarKinect for Kinect which can track facial expressions such as eye winks, mouth movements and other facial movements and display that on your Xbox Live avatar online. 3D TRON: Legacy Spectacle Powers Up at the Box Office
Generations of fans who waited over 28 years to see Walt Disney Studio’s TRON return to the big screen were eager to catch the film early. TRON: Legacy took in $3.5 million in its midnight screenings around the U.S., which was on par with James Cameron’s AVATAR. The movie’s total Friday box office haul was $18 million. The original movie’s entire theatrical run during the summer of 1982, which included movies like Steven Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, was $33 million.
