Award winning composer Austin Wintory’s highly acclaimed score to thatgamecompany’s Journey, the most downloaded PlayStation game in history, is now available for digital download. This is Wintory’s second project with thatgamecompany. He previously scored flOw, now featured at the Smithsonian Museum’s The Art of Video Games exhibit. Wintory recently spoke at the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012) in San Francisco. The Journey score album will be available through iTunes and PlayStation Store.

The rest of the world is about to get their hands on Epic Games China’s Mercenary Ops. The PC-exclusive, third-person perspective shooter launched in China back in 2010. New publisher Delkans is launching the Unreal Engine 3 game in the U.S. and Europe this summer. Developed in Shanghai by a large number of ex-Ubisoft Tom Clancy developers, the game is being updated for the English-speaking gaming audience. Sony Online Entertainment is readying its latest massively multiplayer online (MMO) game with PlanetSide 2. Creative director Matthew Higby was on hand at GDC 2012 to outline the impressive on-the-fly switch between flight, tanks and infantry in the new action shooter. Sony Online Entertainment has expanded its popular PC and PlayStation 3 MMO game, DC Universe Online with The Battle for Earth. The new pack includes three Duos, an Alert, two Raids, new gear and rewards and an incredible new power set – Earth Powers – that lets you deal damage or play the Tank role in an exciting new way. Q-Games has always been a developer that’s been just as much about style as it has substance with its games.  Take a look at the PixelJunk Shooter games, or, for that matter, the gorgeous PixelJunk Eden or the entertaining (if slightly difficult) PixelJunk SideScroller.  However, its latest effort, PixelJunk 4AM, might be its most innovative to date.  The reason for that is, instead of giving you pre-set objectives, it instead lets you play around with a musical space, shaping it however you see fit using the PlayStation Move controller.

Overwolf, a software company specializing in developing in-game overlay products that bring advanced social functionality to online gamers, is collaborating with Intel to help make PC games playable on new Windows tablets. A fully functional demo was introduced to the public during Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012) at the Intel booth. The public launch of the product is expected later this year.

Free-to-play games are the fastest-growing segment in gaming today. And at the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012), a new breed of free-to-play games like Adhesive Games’ Hawken and Piranha Games’ MechWarrior Online has emerged. Showcasing in-game footage from MechWarrior Online, this new video is full of lasers, rockets, and giant robots. Showcasing the CryEngine 3 technoloigy, the video features an Atlas, a Jenner and a Hunchback battling it out in a remote wilderness location, one of many environments that will launch with MechWarrior Online later this summer.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Game Connection announced that independent developer Wolpertinger Games' upcoming title Phobos has won the Game Connection America 2012 Best Selected Project award. Featuring a unique art style and a tense, twisted plot, Phobos provides a highly immersive experience for fans of suspense and horror game genres and is currently in development for major platforms, including Xbox LIVE. Game Connection took place in San Francisco in tandem with the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012).

SAN FRANCISCO – The Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012) is officially in the record books. The world’s largest and longest-running event serving professionals dedicated to the art and science of making games held to its title of “largest” with a record-breaking 22,500 game industry professionals making the trek to the Moscone Center in San Francisco. That’s a 17% increase in attendance over the previous year’s event.  Following the success of the show, organizers have announced that GDC 2013 will return to the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco from Monday, March 25 to Friday, March 29, 2013, – with a call for lecture submissions to open this summer.
