SAN FRANCISCO -- Richard Garriott is at GDC 2010 this week to talk about his new venture into social games. With the declaration of its formation as a company less than a month old, officials with Portalarium, Inc., announced today that its first game, Sweet @$! Poker, is now in commercial launch. The game is available on Facebook and during its short beta cycle of only five weeks has already zoomed to become the 12th most popular poker app on Facebook (out of 47 total) and the 32nd most popular Facebook card game overall (out of 200+ total).

After a two-year hiatus to travel to the International Space Station, work on a film documentary, ignite a personal rapid transit initiative, and wrap up post-flight experiments and speaking engagements, veteran game designer, Richard Garriott, is returning to the video game industry where he has been a fixture for more than 30 years – this time with a broad-based new social media company called Portalarium. Garriott is best known for his award-winning Ultima Series (ORIGIN/Electronic Arts) of fantasy role playing games and Ultima Online, the first commercially successful massively multiplayer online game released in 1997 and still operating today.

When it comes to avid videogame collectors, there are fans and then there are fanatics. Twenty one year-old Lisa Courtney from Hertfordshire, England is celebrating this week after being officially recognized as the individual with the largest Pokemon memorabilia collection in the world, having accumulated 12,113 different items over 13 years.  Her incredible record-breaking collection, which is still growing in size, has been featured in the new Guinness World Records 2010 Gamer's Edition, now available in the U.S.

In a sign that may indicate a shift for interactive channels in the television landscape, TNS set-top box data measuring daily time spent viewing per set-top box revealed that TAG, the games-on-demand channel, topped 43 other linear channels available through Oceanic Time Warner Cable in Hawaii for the most minutes viewers spent watching.

Although overall videogame sales have been down seven of the last eight months compared to the record-breaking 2008, games are still the driving force in entertainment, as well as electronics and toys today. The $550 million, five-day haul that Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 raked in – the largest entertainment launch in history -- shows the power of interactive entertainment even amidst the tough economic climate.
