Gamania Digital Entertainment has opened a North American item mall for its free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Lucent Heart. Gamers now access the new item mall for unique outfits and other in-game items. This is the latest game to build its business model on free gameplay, enticing gamers to purchase virtual goods with real money. The game was promoted at E3 last month through cosplay (costume play).

Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) President John Smedley made his annual community address at Fan Faire 2011, a gathering of dedicated massively multiplayer online gamers at Bally’s Las Vegas. During the event, Smedley announced details on its newest game, Planetside 2, the next generation first-person shooter designed to take the genre places where technology wouldn’t allow back when the original launched in 2003.

Bigpoint has registered over 3 million users for its Battlestar Galactica Online massively multiplayer online (MMO) game. Now it’s offering its biggest update. Players can challenge other players to private, instanced PvP (player versus player) matches in ranked battles or duels. In Ranked matches, the game’s matchmaking system will help pair players of similar Arena rating, ship size, and class, and let them battle it out in their own private piece of space. Blizzard Entertainment lost approximately 600,000 subscribers during its last quarter, so the game publisher is opening up the world of Azeroth to anyone who wants to explore it – at least through Level 20 character progression. With the new Rage of Firelands (patch 4.2), the company has removed the previous 10- and 14-day trial time restrictions, and players who are interested in trying out World of Warcraft can now play the base game for free up to a maximum character level of 20, including draenei and blood elf characters. Before the world caught the World of Warcraft fever, many gamers spent their time playing a completely different MMO, and that would be Star Wars Galaxies. The Star Wars franchise has commanded arguably the most loyal fanbase of all time, capitalizing on their loyalty with books, comics, and even video games, outside of the 6 major film releases. Though Star Wars Galaxies has been running strong for 8 years, Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts will be pulling the plug on the game later this year as they move onto greener pastures.

Syfy Ventures is entering the growing social games space by launching its first ever publishing business under the Syfy Games banner. Available initially on Facebook in the United States -- with further expansion onto other social networks and platforms in Syfy territories worldwide -- the suite of high quality games, completely sponsorable, will embrace the sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, action/adventure, and superhero genres, ranging from original content to games based upon Syfy programming.  The first round of games is scheduled for launch later this year.

Take-Two Interactive is serious about the Asian massively multiplayer online (MMO) market. The game publisher, which has yet to take the MMO plunge in the U.S., has announced its second game for Asia. 2K Games has partnered with XLGAMES to develop and publish a MMO game for the Asian market based upon one of 2K Games’ top-selling franchise. This follows a partnership between 2K Sports and Nexon to develop an MMO baseball game for Asia.

To celebrate, Nexon is rolling out a series of anniversary-themed in-game events and prizes throughout the entire month of May. While World of Warcraft gets all the MMO press with its 12 million subscriptions, Nexon has shown that the free-to-play model works in the U.S.

Blizzard Entertainment donated $800,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The donation is based on 50 percent of the total sales during November and December 2010 of a special in-game pet, the Moonkin Hatchling, for Blizzard's award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game, World of Warcraft.
