Earlier this month, we reported on the story that 2K Sports was looking to launch its latest basketball sim, NBA 2K13, sometime in early October, and would have the game ready to hit the floor of E3 next week.  Today, 2K Sports confirmed the story, stating that its championship series would indeed be heading back to stores to once again dominate the paint.

After a fiscal report that questioned the future of the Major League Baseball 2K franchise, we were wondering if 2K Sports had gotten a little soft, concerned about how they could compete with their main rival, EA Sports.  Well, we got our answer today with a nice tomahawk jam to the face, in the form of an announcement for NBA 2K13.

With The Amazing Spider-Man set to hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in a matter of weeks, Activision will be introducing the best of both worlds when it comes to the web slinger’s gaming adventures.  On the one hand, the development team at Beenox is handling the game, and you already know about the work they did on Shattered Dimensions and Edge of Time.  On the other, they’re going with the open level design that worked so well in previous Spider-Man games before that.  You can’t lose.

We love it when old-school games get a re-release, for a number of reasons.  The sheer joy that the games themselves bring, the fact that we don’t need to hook up an old-school console (from a dusty closet) and a blown-out cartridge to play them, the fact we don’t need to pay hundreds of dollars for the original game and instead invest just a few bucks to relive them…and the list goes on.  Sega has been well known as a company that loves their classic library, and over the next couple of weeks, they’ll prove it with five upcoming release packs for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

To be honest, Nintendo did manage to do fairly well with the Wii.  Not only did it finally nail down using a typical CD format for its games (shying away from the cartridge and mini-discs it used previously), but it also effectively introduced motion gaming to the scene, with such favorites as Wii Sports and Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.  And while it is on its last legs with the upcoming Wii U slated for release this fall, that doesn’t mean the party is completely over for it.  In fact, there are five games that will still make it worth playing this summer – that is, if the Wii is the only option you have.

Sonic the Hedgehog has been around for years now, entertaining us with his platforming adventures on the Genesis before moving on to other platforms and, eventually, multi-system success on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  But the ride hasn’t always been the greatest with him, thanks to lackluster efforts since Sonic Unleashed (seriously…a Werehog) and the iffy next-gen debut of Sonic the Hedgehog, where he fell for a…human girl.  Ick.  Anyway, that said, he did have some great games over the years…so why not count down the best?

Gamestop continues to ride the success of its Nationwide NASCAR driver Joey Logano. The young driver plays all the games that are featured on the cars that he drives. Disney Cruise Line doesn’t want passengers to take a vacation from gaming. Walt Disney Imagineer Bob Zalk was at the forefront of equipping the new $1 billion Disney Fantasy ship, and its sister the Disney Magic, with state-of-the-art gaming technology that can’t be found on land. Over the past few years, Konami Digital Entertainment has worked closely with school districts in Hawaii and West Virginia to integrate its bestselling DanceDanceRevolution (DDR) game into their physical education programs. Now the game publisher is taking things a step further. This fall, schools around the nation will be able to use DanceDanceRevolution Classroom Edition, a PC-based game crafted specially for schools and fitness classes. Sweeping the nation one classroom at a time, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. has collaborated with  the nation’s leading health and fitness organizations including the American Diabetes Association, The National Foundation on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition and Let’s Move in Schools to promote fitness in schools through the new DanceDanceRevolution Classroom Edition.

Mario has some new games heading to Nintendo 3DS and Kirby is celebrating his 20th birthday. Nintendo will launch New Super Mario Bros. 2, a new side-scrolling Mario adventure for Nintendo 3DS, this summer. Later in the year, Nintendo will mark the 20th anniversary of the Kirby game series with a special compilation game disc for the Wii system. Other content on the way includes a system update for Nintendo 3DS, re-runs of the popular Kid Icarus anime videos as well as the May 20 launch of Mario Tennis Open.
