Sonic the Hedgehog has been around for years now, entertaining us with his platforming adventures on the Genesis before moving on to other platforms and, eventually, multi-system success on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  But the ride hasn’t always been the greatest with him, thanks to lackluster efforts since Sonic Unleashed (seriously…a Werehog) and the iffy next-gen debut of Sonic the Hedgehog, where he fell for a…human girl.  Ick.  Anyway, that said, he did have some great games over the years…so why not count down the best?

When Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 came out for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network a couple of years ago, it answered the prayers of dedicated fans seeking a 2D fix of their favorite hero, in favor of the forgettable 3D endeavors.  But at the same time, it didn’t quite “feel” right, with game mechanics being just a little bit off and the level design not quite being as good as the classic Genesis games.  So the developers did some tinkering and have come back with Episode 2, a game that’s much closer in nature to those classics.  But is it the ultimate Sonic experience?  Sadly, it comes up just short, but in different areas than the first game.

It's funny how the "little guy" can suddenly be propelled forward by the right project.  For the longest time, the team at Arkedo has been producing memorable platforming adventures for the Xbox Live indie games channel, including such titles as Jump! among others.  Featuring 8-bit style graphics, these guys have definitely felt an influence in classic gaming.  But now they've moved into the big time, as Sega is teaming up with them to produce the upcoming side scrolling action game Hell Yeah!, due for release this summer.

Kart racers are usually a dime a dozen, especially back in the old days, when it seemed like every gaming company wanted to make its own version to capitalize on the popularity of the Mario Kart games.  But Sega did it quite effectively several months back with Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, a smorgasbord of racing goodness stemming multiple characters and tracks inspired by various Sega classics, including the House of the Dead, Samba de Amigo and more.  The formula worked extremely well for both the company and players, so it should be no surprise that the long-rumored sequel was finally announced today.

This summer will be a big one for Sega fans, as the company has recently announced that it is bringing back the Dreamcast classic Jet Set Radio for a whole new audience to enjoy.  Set to release in the next few months on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, the game will feature hours worth of skating and grafitti spraying fun, along with high definition visuals and most of the original soundtrack.  It's a party just waiting to happen, and you can bet that Beat and Gum will be in attendance.

Throughout the history of video games, the oldest stereotype surrounding the industry has always been do violent video games affect player behavior and personality. It is a known fact that people who play games are exposed to more violence than the average consumer. From nuking entire civilization to obliterating players online, it’s has become more and more common now that games are more focus on squarely providing violent action. For this reason alone, parents have long held an underlining negative attitude towards the industry and those who stand by it, but is this criticism injustice or have developers gone to far? Should government step in?

It’s no surprise that literally every developer is trying something with zombies.  Activision is throwing a number of zombie-infested maps in its Call of Duty franchise; Capcom’s got more than enough undead roaming around between Resident Evil and Dead Rising; and so on.  But little did anyone realize what Sega would be doing with Yakuza, pitting zombies against gangsters in a battle for control over the city of Kamurocho.  While Yakuza: Dead Souls may not be as strong an entry as the previous games (its focus is much different), it’s still more fun than previously anticipated.

With its first three House of the Dead games, Sega pretty much kept to form, putting two unlikely heroes together to save the world from a zombie apocalypse.  Sure, the third game – which arrived on PlayStation Network a while back – introduced some awesome shotguns, but the status quo of “shoot everything that moves” remained intact.  So would the same go for House of the Dead 4?  Well, sort of.

Say what you will about how much he's dragged his feet in the past with less-than-epic adventures, but Sonic is making a comeback for the better.  He's just come off a great new game with Sonic Generations, and later this year, he'll be hitting the open road yet again in the yet-to-be-confirmed Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing 2.  In between those two releases, he'll wrap up his Sonic the Hedgehog 4 saga with Episode 2, set to release next month for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

Sega’s downloadable game slate is looking incredible.  We certainly won’t lie.  Along with a revamped version of Jet Set Radio, the recently released House of the Dead 4, the upcoming original game Hell Yeah (more on that shortly) and the return of Sonic the Hedgehog (part four, episode two), Sega has a lot of genres covered.  You can count fighting in there as well, as the company is bringing Virtua Fighter 5 back to market with the upcoming expansion Final Showdown, set for release on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

The organizers of Classic Gaming Expo announced today that the 2012 Classic Gaming Expo will be held August 11 and 12 at the recently renovated Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The show’s historic ties with Las Vegas, and specifically the Plaza Hotel, made it the obvious choice to play host to this year’s convention.

Once upon a time, we had game consoles that didn’t connect to the Internet, provide online global rankings or even go “above and beyond” when it came to graphics.  This was during the heyday of the Sega Genesis, a console that, from the early 90’s onward, dominated the game universe for some time.  Kudos to Sega for not only making a capable game console, but also a library to back it up, ranging from action games to sports titles to unique fare like Gunstar Heroes and Toejam and Earl.  If you somehow missed out on this generation, don’t fret, because Sega is bringing it to yet another platform.

Sega and The Creative Assembly offer Total War: Shogun 2 fans the first expansion to the hit real-time strategy (RTS) sequel. The Fall of the Samurai offers a number of the modern weapons available on land and at sea. The expansion also introduces a new third-person mode, which offers direct fire-control over Gatling guns, cannon, and naval weaponry, and explores some of the new multiplayer options

Tell me if you’ve heard this before.  It’s the future, and a robotic threat has overtaken the place, threatening to put a damper on humanity unless they’re stopped before it’s too late.  Hello, Terminator?  Yeah, the storyline definitely may not be the most original we’ve seen, but Binary Domain still has more than enough to make up for it.  Though it can’t quite touch last year’s brilliant Vanquish, it comes close, which is more than we can say for a  lot of Gears of War clones these days.
