It’s really weird how some of these April Fools jokes are turning into actual products, isn’t it?  Take a look at the iCade, a miniature iPad arcade cabinet that was first shown as an April Fools joke, but has since become a best-selling accessory for the market.  Now, THQ has confirmed yet another April Fools gag that’s becoming a reality, one that introduces a whole new way to play through the world of Steelport in Saints Row: The Third.

Throughout the history of video games, the oldest stereotype surrounding the industry has always been do violent video games affect player behavior and personality. It is a known fact that people who play games are exposed to more violence than the average consumer. From nuking entire civilization to obliterating players online, it’s has become more and more common now that games are more focus on squarely providing violent action. For this reason alone, parents have long held an underlining negative attitude towards the industry and those who stand by it, but is this criticism injustice or have developers gone to far? Should government step in?

THQ saw enough return on the original Darksiders game to enlist developer Vigil Games to create a sequel. Rather than offering more of the same with Darksiders 2, the developer opted for a brand new protagonist and ushered in new gameplay capabilities based on Death. The original Darksiders was a triumph for the newly founded (at the time) Vigil Games, headed up by comic book universe master Joe Maduriera (aka “Joe Mad”), telling a tale revolving around the apocalypse but making it kick-ass enough that fans of action games could truly appreciate it.  Granted, having Mark Hamill on board for voice acting didn’t hurt either.  So for the sequel, Darksiders II, the team had an even bigger task ahead, not only taking the game in a whole new direction, but introducing an unlikely hero – fellow Horseman Death – in the mix.  We recently gave the game a go with a hands-on session hosted by THQ, just to get an idea what it’s like.

It’s been ages since we’ve run across a really good arena shooter.  I can still remember sitting around PC gaming centers a few years back, playing Unreal Tournament to my heart’s content and showing people who’s boss with Quake III Arena on the Dreamcast.  Now, outside of a Quake re-release on Xbox Live Arcade, there doesn’t seem to be any sign of the genre in modern day gaming.  Fortunately, Illfonic Studios is here to shake things up with Nexuiz, a game that happily reminds us of those good ol’ days while providing a fresh ingredient to keep things lively.

Back in 1991, we didn’t worry about playing networkable games or developing strategies for first-person shooter battles.  Gaming was much simpler, a matter of just having fun with the likes of the SNES or, better yet, going to an arcade like Aladdin’s Castle to have a good time.  It’s here I first discovered Technos’ WWF Wrestlefest, a game that featured the likes of Hulk Hogan and the Legion of Doom battling in simple yet entertaining 2D action.  Now, 21 years (and several arcade closures) later, the Wrestlefest label lives on, thanks to a new App Store release from THQ.

What is it with old-school arcade revivals this year?  First The Simpsons Arcade Game made a comeback on both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, entertaining a whole new generation of gamers without the need to break out a roll of quarters.  Now THQ is hitting the wrestling ring with a remake of WWE Wrestlefest, a game that originally body slammed into arcades back in ’91 under Technos’ direction.  And just like it did back then, Wrestlefest promises to be button-mashing fun.

The beloved arcade classic WWF WrestleFest, now aptly titled WWE WrestleFest will be making quite a "surpise return" to the gaming squared circle next Tuesday, February 21st.
