I admit, I was a little concerned about how Silent Hill: Downpour would turn out.  When I played the game at Konami’s booth last year at E3, I couldn’t quite get the hang of it, even though I’ve easily gotten into Silent Hill games in the past.  And considering the disappointing treatment of Silent Hill HD Collection last month (two games for $50, and with all kinds of glitches), I was fearing the worst.  But despite a few problems, Silent Hill: Downpour weathers the storm well enough to please fans of the long-running survival horror series.  Don’t expect a miracle by any means, but do expect plenty of scares and a good, engrossing story.

In what appears to be a decisive turning point, U.S. flat-panel TV shipments are projected to dip for the first time on an annual basis this year, ending an unbroken string of growth since the market began. Shipments in 2012 of flat-panel TVs into the American market are forecast to decline to 37.1 million units, down 5 percent from 39.1 million units in 2011, according to an IHS iSuppli U.S. TV Market Tracker report from information and analytics provider IHS. Only last year, shipments had inched up 1 percent from 38.6 million units in 2010. Some consumer electronics companies continue to do well, like Vizio, which can be seen in the video below showcasing new big screen TVs.

According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)’s Theatrical Market Statistics Report for 2011, global box office receipts for all films released around the world reached $32.6 billion, an increase of 3% over 2010, due to ongoing growth of box office in international markets. Each international region experienced box office growth in 2011.  Chinese box office grew by 35% in 2011 alone, by far the largest growth in major markets. This report does not factor in the rising cost of tickets, especially with 3D movies like the hit Relativity film Immortals.

Why am I not a bigger fan of role-playing games?  Because outside of team aspects or any given new features, they mostly play the same.  Cast an attack, prepare for a counter-attack, use a special attack to finish the battle, repeat.  Yeah, there’s story too, but it seems built more for folks that are fans rather than the ones that aren’t.  That said, there are exceptions to the rule, and I’m happy to report that Namco’s Tales of the Abyss remains a good one.

Sony is no stranger to taking its PlayStation 2 classics and remastering them for PlayStation 3 collections, but it’s been a business practice that’s proven worthwhile.  Both of the God of War compilations (Collection and Origins Collection) are outstanding; Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are in a class by themselves; and this year’s Jak and Daxter Collection has been nothing short of marvelous.  Now Insomniac Games gets a turn, even though the company’s moved on to duo-console development, as three of its greatest PS2 efforts are being celebrated in a new collection.  And, yes, it’s Ratchet and Clank.

There’s no question we’re on a fever pitch for the new Marvel’s The Avengers film.  How could you not be?  Between Robert Downey Jr. doing his slick Iron Man thing, Samuel L. Jackson playing the baddest Nick Fury on the planet, and the return of the Hulk (and not the Ed Norton Hulk), it’s crazy how much anticipation is going into it.  Which leads us to wonder…why is there not an Avengers video game that ties in with the film?

NBA 2K12 has been roaring up the basketball charts over the past few months, mainly due to the lack of a (direct) competitor.  But it's still one hell of a sim, and players everywhere have been dunking and raining three's, even if it's without New York Knicks superstar Jeremy Lin.  (But, yeah, we know you play as him sometime.  Admit it.)  Now the madness is set to continue next month, as Best Buy has announced a new edition that will be sold exclusively through them.

When I played Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for Nintendo 3DS last year, I saw some great potential out of the game, save problems and all.  But it still felt a little short-handed to me, as if Capcom was holding back for something better – in this case, Resident Evil Revelations.  And this problem has happened more than once, and is likely to happen again when next month’s Operation Raccoon City is dwarfed by Resident Evil 6 later this year.  But that’s later on.  For now, I humbly suggest you enjoy Revelations, because it’s the Resident Evil experience that the 3DS needs.
