As part of its 11th annual Zeitgeist (German for “the spirit of the times”) 2011 list, Google revealed the Top 10 Video Games and Top 10 Online Games of the year. Surprisingly, some of the big games of 2011, including Batman: Arkham City and Modern Warfare 3 didn’t make the list. Perhaps because gamers were eager for big games coming in 2012 like Mass Effect 3 and Diablo 3. Google’s annual compilation of the most popular and fastest-rising search terms is the most detailed and data-rich yet. On the interactive 2011 Zeitgeist site, there’s additional information in all types of categories. But for games, check out the two relevant lists below the video from the top-searched game of the year, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Okay, Battlefield 3 fanboys, you got me. It is a little unfair. Battlefield 3 has no split-screen gaming. Does it mean that it won't be a great title? Absolutely not. I get pumped up every time I hear Jay-Z's "99 Problems" mixed in with the awesome "in-game" footage in the commercial. It's unavoidable while watching any football game on Sunday. And positive reviews are pouring in. Like most of you, I already have my copy pre-ordered. And I'm excited--but, a little less excited than I am about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

When Call of Duty: Black Ops hit the market last year, sales numbers hit amazingly high numbers, totalling over $1 billion in sales worldwide. However, there wasn't much competition against it in the world of first-person shooters because Battlefield: Bad Company 2 was released 8 months prior to Black Ops. Now that Battlefield 3 is right up against Modern Warfare 3 by being only two weeks apart in release, you would think that it would slow Call of Duty's momentum down even just the slightest bit. However, CEO of Activision Bobby Kotick likes to think otherwise.
