Electronic Arts’ Battlefield Premium has 1.3 million people paying for the service. Signing up is a $50 one-time fee, which, when you do the math, means DICE has added $60 million to EA’s coffers. That’s on top of the $1.3 billion haul from digital sales in the past 12 months for EA. With George Lucas taking flight with his new Red Tails movie in theaters, his LucasArts division continues to have success with Star Wars games. With over four years of development, a team of 200 employees and a reported budget of $80 million, Electronic Arts has come under fire of late for BioWare’s massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Star Wars: The Old Republic. But Michael Pachter, videogame analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities, said the game has already sold 2 million copies worldwide. And the game is already a huge success and money generator for EA, as well as licensor LucasArts.

In anticipation of its IPO, Zynga showcased new games at Zynga Unleashed, its first media event hosted by CEO and Founder Mark Pincus held at its new San Francisco headquarters. The company gave a sneak peek of several new social games, including the next chapter in its Ville franchise and teased its own new play service, code named Project Z. CastleVille is the newest game heading to Facebook. Cityville, the last title in the franchise, has over 74 million gamers. There’s also a new Zynga Casino that features Zynga Poker and the newly announced Zynga Bingo to create the world’s largest and most social casino. The company is also launching a new Hidden Objects genre with the social game, Hidden Chronicles.

After the Japanese earthquake slowed down production of iPad 2, an explosion at a China plant is wreaking havoc on the tablet device. The explosion at Foxconn’s Chengdu plant could result in a production loss of 500,000 Apple iPad 2 tablets in the second quarter, according to a new analysis from IHS iSuppli. Lucasfilm has chosen Prime Focus as a partner to collaborate on the 3D conversion of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace for theatrical release, heralding an exciting new era in Star Wars entertainment. Prime Focus was selected by Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) following an exhaustive testing process. The 3D movie will hit theaters February 10, 2012, but fans can explore all six movies on Blu-ray for the first time this September from Fox Home Entertainment.

Rovio, the creator of the Angry Birds entertainment franchise, has received a $42 million Series A investment in the company to facilitate its strategic expansion beyond iPad 2, iPhone, and Android devices. Currently, Angry Birds is played by 40 million monthly active users, and the game has grown from an App Store success to become one of the most recognized entertainment franchises in just over a year. Rovio has new Angry Birds games coming, including a tie-in to the new Rio movie from Twentieth Century Fox.

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Gameloft, a leading developer and publisher of digital and online games, has signed a long-term, multi-platform licensing agreement with Epic Games that enables Gameloft to incorporate Unreal Engine 3 in four new games, two to be released in 2011 and two in 2012. The new games will be developed for the next generation of Android and Apple smartphones and tablets, as well as set-top boxes and PlayStation Network. Unreal currently powers Epic’s hit game, Bulletstorm, and the upcoming Gears of War 3. Gameloft most recently demonstrated Asphalt 6 on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play at Mobile World Congress 2011.

Things aren’t looking good over at the Walt Disney Company’s video game division. Disney Interactive Studios has reportedly laid off half of its 700 employees this week amidst a massive redirection of game development. Despite the success of Warren Spector’s Junction Point game, Epic Mickey, the studio is refocusing its effort in the burgeoning casual online gaming space. Games like TRON: Evolution and Tangled failed to generate blockbuster sales. The company is still trying to right its ship after spending $763 million to purchase casual gaming site Playdom.
