2011 definitely flourished for some folks in the game industry, but not everyone saw profit from their game sales.  Take THQ.  The company definitely had a diverse set of releases last year, between its popular WWE games, new Red Faction and Warhammer action titles, and Saints Row the Third.  However, not all of them were financially viable, and it resulted in the cancellation of various franchises and closure of a few studios.  Will 2012 be the year the company bounces back?

In a strange case of reality following fiction, the death of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il was predicted – down to the year – by THQ’s recent videogame, Homefront. Developer Kaos Studios worked with a former CIA officer who specialized in North Korea, Tae Kim. With the death of the 69 year old president, the next step in the science fiction game chronicled the rise of North Korea under the iron rule of Kim Jung-Un. Red 5 Studios continues to bring new members to its development team from some of the biggest game studios in the world. The California game studio has hired former Crytek team lead, Ury Zhilinsky. As senior graphics programmer, Zhilinsky is the latest AAA developer to join the studio’s talented team – which includes former World of Warcraft, Tribes, and MAG developers.

NEVERDIE Studios, creators of the ROCKtropia Virtual World, a sophisticated, next-gen, cash prize-based game world with mythology drawn from pop culture, has launched a unique, in-game event for players of its recently released massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Hunt The Thing. This new movie-length MMO event is inspired by Universal Pictures’ current thriller The Thing, now in theatres nationwide. The game was developed using Crytek’s CryENGINE2 technology.

THQ has enlisted German game developer Crytek to bring Homefront 2 to gamers. The original game was created by New York City-based Kaos Studios, which THQ closed earlier this year. Crytek has had success with Crysis 2, which Electronic Arts released earlier this year. This likely means the new game will run on the CryEngine, rather than Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3, which powered the first Homefront title.

When Crysis 2 came out earlier this year for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, it actually sold quite well for EA and Crytek, and proved that the series could perform on the right kind of level for console gamers.  It left a few people wondering, though, whether the original Crysis would ever get a shot at a release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  Well, it's finally coming, as the companies announced through Gametrailers.tv that the game would be coming out next month as a digital download for both systems.

Cologne -- The 2011 Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC Europe) kicked off Gamescom 2011 with a successful showing and a final attendee count of more than 2,100 game professionals representing 57 countries. Professionals from all areas of the game industry convened throughout the three day conference and engaged on trends and new opportunities among peers. Many speakers stayed in Cologne, Germany to showcase their titles to the media and public at Gamescom, which has also seen record growth.

One of the most highly-acclaimed first person shooters of 2011 is getting a facelift. EA and Crytek have released the Crysis 2 Ultra Upgrade, giving PC gamers full DirectX11 support. Enhancing the Crysis 2 gaming experience on PC, the Crysis 2 Ultra Upgrade delivers higher quality visuals and features including tessellation, water rendering improvements, high quality HDR motion blur, and many other special effects and higher quality texture formats with the optional high res texture pack. La La Land Records has released a two disc Crysis 2 soundtrack, featuring original main themes by Oscar Winning Composer Hans Zimmer. EA and La La Land Records recently released the limited edition eight-disc MEDAL OF HONOR Box Set. Crysis 2 is a video game joint venture between German based Crytek and U.S. based Electronic Arts. Zimmer worked with Lorne Balfe and Crytek’s composers’ Borislav Slavov and Tilman Sillescu in creating the soundtrack.

German game developer Crytek used Autodesk Scaleform software in the development of Crysis 2, the new science fiction first-person shooter published by Electronic Arts (EA). Scaleform, a leading Flash-based user interface (UI) and multimedia solution, was used to support the cross-platform development of stereoscopic 3D menus, displays and interfaces. Autodesk acquired Scaleform Corporation, a privately held middleware and UI tools company, on March 1, 2011. Crysis 2 has seen strong sales globally since launch, topping 1 million copies sold in its first two weeks.

While there was a lot of hype leading up to the launches of Electronic Arts games like Bulletstorm, Dragon Age 2, and Dead Space 2, Crysis 2 has crushed all of those titles in the global sales game. Boston -- With one of the big games of 2011 set to launch on March 22 in 3D across PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Electronic Arts had Crysis 2 on hand at PAX East 2011. Running in 3D with NVIDIA technology, the game from German developer Crytek was one of the top titles at the show. While gamers were able to download the multiplayer demo for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 early, Boston attendees got 3D hands-on with the new shooter. LAS VEGAS -- Ramping up its efforts to drive consumer adoption of 3D on mobile devices, 3D technology company Master Image is showcasing its glasses-free 3D displays for smart phones and tablets in Las Vegas this week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2011). The company is showing off autostereoscopic technology similar to what Nintendo is using in its Nintendo 3DS portable gaming device.

The game, which ships this winter, is the first to utilize the technology behind Crtek’s Crysis 2. LOS ANGELES – At E3 2010, 3D was all the rage. Sony and Nintendo are pushing 3D in two new directions and focusing on the mainstream consumer. The Nintendo 3DS will introduce American and European consumers to auto stereoscopic 3D (Japanese cell phones already feature this glasses-free technology) with a full slate of games. Sony’s offering a free stereoscopic 3D upgrade to its 35 million PlayStation 3s this month, turning every console into a 3D movie and gaming machine. With those giants making the jump to 3D, just about every game maker is developing titles to support this technology.
