With The Hunger Games breaking box office records on its opening weekend, it’s just a matter of time before the film hits Blu-ray, DVD and digital delivery services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Blockbuster. It’s big movie releases like this that are changing the home entertainment landscape, in tandem with new smartphones, tablets and game consoles and portables.

Thanks in part to the sales surge of Sony’s PlayStation 3, there are now Blu-ray Disc players in one quarter of U.S. households. Lower hardware prices for stand-alone BD players have also contributed to this growth. According to Centris Research, the installed base of Blu-ray players in U.S. homes was up 47% in Q4 2011 over the same quarter of 2010.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has sold more than 1.2 million units of the action-fantasy film Immortals in its first week. Nearly half of those sales were for Blu-ray versions of the game and 10% were for the 3D Blu-ray combo pack. On Tuesday, March 27, “South Park: The Complete Fifteenth Season” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD by Comedy Central Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution. Each Blu-ray and DVD come with an added bonus – free copies of Microsoft’s South Park: Tenorman’s Revenge Xbox Live game.

Twihards were in the mood for love before Valentine’s Day. Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate company, has continued to make a mint off Stephanie Meyer’s last book in the supernatural love triangle franchise. It was a very smart decision to split the final film into two parts, as the home entertainment release is picking up right where the theatrical release left off. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 sold an estimated 3.2 million DVD and Blu-ray units during its first weekend of release. Consoles and PC's have had a slow month interms of new AAA quality games arriving for your respected platform. While January got off to a slow start, it quickly recovered to bring us high quality tittles through digital distribution. Plenty of great downloadable arcade tittles were made available through XBLA, PSN and Steam, giving us many hidden gems on the digital marketplace. Let's look back at the games we reviewed over the past month.

Every Tuesday, Sony brings its PlayStation faithful new content, add-ons for your favorite games, Themes and avatars for your PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Again another standard week of PSN goods you can get, but for the most part the main draw are going to be demos. Twisted Metal is finally going to hit store shelves and the fans of  the series will be eager to get their hands on the multiplayer demo now available.

Summit Entertainment’s fourth installment in the blockbuster TWILIGHT SAGA franchise, BREAKING DAWN – PART 1, has earned over $701.3 million in global box office receipts since the film’s release on November 18, 2011.  The movie’s well on its way to becoming the highest grossing film in the series to date, as it looks to surpass the worldwide box office gross of NEW MOON’s $709.8 million. Actress Ashley Greene talks about working on the films in this exclusive video interview.

We're as much of a fan of James Bond as the next guy who likes his Q gadgets, but we can't help but think what a bummer it is that some of the best films in the series, like Goldeneye and (dare we argue) Octopussy aren't available yet on Blu-Ray format, the way they were meant to be seen.  But MGM rectified that this week at the Consumer Electronics Show when it made an announcement at Panasonic's booth regarding a special collector's edition set, due for release this year.

One brave warrior, touched by the gods, must overcome all odds to save mankind from a merciless and powerful tyrant when IMMORTALS comes to Blu-ray and DVD on March 6th from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Directed by visionary filmmaker Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) and written by Charles Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides, the home entertainment release is chock-full of must-see bonus features including an alternate beginning, two alternate endings, deleted scenes and an amazing graphic novel, creating the ultimate viewing experience. LAS VEGAS -- The Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), a cross-industry consortium dedicated to creating a consumer-friendly open market for digital content distribution, held a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2012) to outline the expansion of UltraViolet. Following the launch of an initial 19 UltraViolet-enabled titles, more than 750,000 households have registered with UltraViolet to create and start using personal digital libraries.

Every Tuesday, Sony brings its Playstation faithful new content, add-ons for your favorite games, Themes and avatars for your PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. For those who have the Playstation Plus, you can now get telltale's Back to The Future game for free. Ever wanted to find out what happened and wanted to continue your adventures with Marty Mcfly and Doc? Now is your chance, as you get all the six episodic for free. Another game you can get thanks to your PSN Plus membership is Sword & Soldiers. It's an enjoyable 2D sidescrolling strategy game that is highly replayable with a group of friends.

Although many people have upgraded to Blu-ray Discs, the majority of Americans still view movies on DVD. While the overall home entertainment market is still hurting as more people rent than buy movies, blockbuster event movies still entice purchases. Warner Home Video had a very good year with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and II dominating the chart. Disney has a trio of kid-friendly movies, including Cars 2, which is featured in the exclusive video interview with Owen Wilson and Eddie Izzard below. And it's worth noting that every movie, save for Bridesmaids, had a videogame tie-in for gamers to further explore these worlds.

There’s never been a better time for Gleeks. The new season of “Glee” has righted its ship after a rocky start, and now there’s a new Konami Karaoke Revolution: Glee Volume 3 game for Wii on store shelves. Complementing the third Wii game is Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s Glee: The Concert Movie 3D Blu-ray. The new movie introduces Shazam technology, which connects your PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Blu-ray, or DVD player to your smartphone.

James Cameron made Avatar to take advantage of 3D technology, but the Oscar-winning filmmaker also made sure that the film would play well in 2D. And although he originally said the experience was designed for a large screen, Avatar has been a hit on mobile devices. The movie comes pre-installed on the T-Mobile Samsung Virbant Galaxy S. Now Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Lightstorm Entertainment are bringing a first-of-its-kind interactive version of the film called Avatar iTunes Extras Special Edition beginning on Tuesday, December 20. The world of Harry Potter comes to life in New York City. In celebration of the Blu-ray release of the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, on November 12 and 13 the International Quidditch Association (IQA) will host the 2011 Quidditch World Cup (QWC). Nintety-five college quidditch teams will descend on New York City to compete in a live action-packed sporting event, best described as “a cross between the Super Bowl and a medieval festival.” The two days will feature 450 games with live music, entertainers, food and drink vendors, and many other exciting events.

VIZ Media, the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, will release a new anime feature-length film, Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, on DVD November 8th. The movie is based on the highly popular Professor Layton series of video games for the Nintendo DS. The DVD features both subtitled and dubbed English dialogue options.

NEVERDIE Studios, creators of the ROCKtropia Virtual World, a sophisticated, next-gen, cash prize-based game world with mythology drawn from pop culture, has launched a unique, in-game event for players of its recently released massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Hunt The Thing. This new movie-length MMO event is inspired by Universal Pictures’ current thriller The Thing, now in theatres nationwide. The game was developed using Crytek’s CryENGINE2 technology.

Strong sales of Thor and the Star Wars saga on Blu-ray Disc (BD) prompted a 156 percent surge in U.S. sales of the format in the release week ending September 18, possibly pointing to brighter days ahead for the overall market for movies on disc, accordingto the new IHS report “Star Wars Shines in its BD Debut,” from information and analysis provider IHS.

Disney Interactive Studios will bring Disney•Pixar’s Cars 2: The Video Game to Nintendo 3DS in conjunction with the November 1 launch of Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s Cars 2 Blu-ray 3D. The 3DS game will join the PlayStation 3 3D game in offering a third dimension to gameplay. Two of the stars from the movie and the game, Larry the Cable Guy and Emily Mortimer, talk about the movie, game, and 3D in this exclusive video interview.

After driving to the top of the box office, Pixar’s Cars 2 comes home on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray 3D, Movie Download and DVD on November 1, 2011. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Pixar Animation Studios, the high octane in-home release invites families and fans of all ages to come along on a journey around the world with the #1 animated film of the year and introduces an exclusive all-new animated short “Air Mater,” featuring the fan favorite character spinning his tales in an exciting adventure high above Radiator Springs. Everyone seems to be coming out with some form of Collector's Edition for their games these days, and Bethesda is no exception.  The company has announced its latest packaging for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, due for release on November 11th.  But unlike most gimmicky collector's edition packages out there, this one actually has some merit -- in the form of a bad-ass 12" dragon statue.

Actress Ashley Eckstein, who’s married to former MLB star David Eckstein, has been keeping busy in the video game space. The actress voices Ahsoka Tano in Cartoon Networks’ hit computer animated TV series, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” She’s also brought that character to life in a slew of Clone Wars video games, including LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Republic Hero. Most recently, she can be heard in Sony Online Entertainment’s Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures MMO and the upcoming Bioware Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO.
