COLOGNE, GERMANY (Reuters) - It's not exactly an Olympic sport - not yet, anyway - but as the London Games drew to a close this past Sunday, thousands of professional videogame players geared up for an event that for some can be as lucrative as winning a gold medal. Videogamers have gathered in Cologne, Germany this week for the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) competition, a professional videogame tournament that runs through August 19.

Gamers can battle for global dominance in the highly-anticipated, award-winning free-to-play massively multiplayer online (MMO) first-person shooter PlanetSide 2. Developed by Sony Online Entertainment, PlanetSide 2 takes all the groundbreaking features from the original game – massive multiplayer battles, distinct empires to rally around, and enormous continents where intense ground and air combat unfolds – and adds features that modern gamers have come to expect of the FPS and MMO genres. At Gamescom 2011 in Cologne, Germany, Electronic Sports League (ESL) in cooperation with NCsoft and ArenaNet offers all the fans an exclusive opportunity to play the Guild Wars 2 PvP in the ESL Arena in Hall 9 August 17 - 21. It will be a great opportunity for each MMORPG player to get the first impressions of the upcoming new game. In addition, the audience will be able to watch developer show matches presenting Guild Wars 2 on the main stage of the Arena, broadcasted live on ESL TV. Visitors will then be able to take part in Q&A sessions with the developers of ArenaNet, following the show matches. Attendees will get a first look at the sylvari from one of the big games of 2012, as well.
