Blizzard Entertainment celebrated an epic launch with its much-anticipated Diablo III, only to experience an epic fail due to DRM issues and the dreaded Error 37 message that prevented many players from logging on. As a result of the launch woes, Blizzard has issued an official apology to gamers, which you can see below this exclusive launch video from a Gamestop in Irvine, CA, home town of Blizzard.

Nissan North America is partnering once again with Sony Computer Entertainment America and Polyphony Digital for a second season of the popular non-scripted TV series GT Academy in the U.S. The series will highlight the latest blending of virtual racing and reality. GT Academy challenges gamers and racing fans to compete in a series of online time trials in pre-selected Nissan vehicles for a shot at becoming a real racing driver. Last year’s competition drew over 53,000 competitors nationwide, with 30-year old Californian Bryan Heitkotter emerging as the winner. Heitkotter has gone on to compete in races for Nissan in the United States, Middle East and Europe. Heikotter talks about the experience in the exclusive video interview below.

BioWare is at PAX East to show gamers what’s in store with two free DLC offerings that are coming soon. Players can join the fight to save the galaxy with the first multiplayer downloadable content pack for Mass Effect 3. Available to download for owners of Mass Effect 3 for no additional charge, the Mass Effect 3: Resurgence Pack adds two new maps to the game’s critically acclaimed cooperative multiplayer experience, along with a variety of new playable characters, new weapons and new items that can be unlocked by acquiring reinforcement packs in the game’s multiplayer store. The Mass Effect 3: Resurgence Pack will be available for download on April 10 on Xbox LIVE, the Origin client software and PlayStation Network in North America, and PlayStation Network in Europe on April 11.

The rest of the world is about to get their hands on Epic Games China’s Mercenary Ops. The PC-exclusive, third-person perspective shooter launched in China back in 2010. New publisher Delkans is launching the Unreal Engine 3 game in the U.S. and Europe this summer. Developed in Shanghai by a large number of ex-Ubisoft Tom Clancy developers, the game is being updated for the English-speaking gaming audience. Blizzard Entertainment will unleash one of the big games of 2012, Diablo III, the next chapter in its critically acclaimed action role-playing game series, on May 15. Starting that day, gamers with a thirst for fast-paced action and adventure will be able to purchase Diablo III at retailers throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. In addition, gamers in the regions above as well as in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Brazil will be able to buy Diablo III digitally via Blizzard’s Battle.net website.

Ubisoft’s Just Dance 3 sold through more than 7 million units since its release, bringing total sell-through of the Just Dance franchise to more than 25 million units worldwide. Launched in October, Just Dance 3 has consistently been in the top five video game sales charts in both the U.S. (NPD) and Europe (GfK Chart Track).  Just Dance 3 was the best-selling U.S. game on the Kinect for Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation Move for PlayStation 3 for December 2011.

Rayman Origins was, in our eyes, one of the best games of 2011.  Michel Ancel and his team made a platformer that all players could easily get into, while including a local multiplayer factor that turned it into the ultimate party experience.  Now, in 2012, the game will be thriving on the portable front, with a release slated for the PlayStation Vita around launch.  There's a version in the works for 3DS as well, though there's a catch at this point regarding it...

LOS ANGELES -- Riot Games today announced that over four million people play League of Legends on a daily basis, a 280% increase since Riot Games last announced the size of its League of Legends community in July 2011. With 11.5 million active monthly players and peak concurrency reaching 1.3 million, League of Legends enters its second competitive season as one of the top five PC games in North America and Europe with a registered player base of over 30 million worldwide. “It’s staggering to think about the fact that over a billion games of League of Legends have been played since launch,” said Marc Merrill, co-founder and President of Riot Games. “In 2012, we intend to deliver even more for our growing audience.”

In this day and age, it's nice to have some extra goodies to pass around in the game industry, whether it's a collectible figure with an Uncharted 3: Collector's Edition, a Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition (c'mon, you want it) or a Gears of War 3 Marcus Fenix statue.  But sometimes the hardware itself takes precedence, especially if it's a limited edition design.  And lucky Nintendo fans will be getting that in Europe come November 25th.

Dr. Ray Muzyka and Dr. Greg Zeschuk, co-founders of BioWare, used the Eurogamer Summit in London to confirm that Star Wars: The Old Republic will launch in North America on December 20, 2011 and in Europe on December 22, 2011. Award-winning soundtrack composer, producer and recording artist Rod Abernethy has crafted the original music score for id Software's post-apocalyptic world in RAGE, the latest game from the acclaimed designers of such classics as the Wolfenstein, DOOM, and QUAKE series. Abernethy brought an immersive hybrid approach to scoring the highly anticipated blockbuster, employing traditional acoustic instrumentation and mixing experimental electronic sounds. RAGE is scheduled to release for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 4th in North America and October 7th in Europe.

Who needs competition? Electronic Arts had a record-breaking launch for NHL 12 with 2K Sports off the ice for good. Based on internal estimates, NHL 12 had its biggest launch week in franchise history with more than $27 million generated at retail worldwide.  First week unit sales of NHL 12were up 19 percent across Europe and North America.  The game launched Sept. 9 in Europe and Sept. 13 in North America.

Subscriber revenue in the combined markets for PC massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) and non-massively multiplayer online games (MOGs) in North America and Europe declined for the first time ever in 2010, marking a historic shift in industry emphasis away from subscriptions and toward microtransactions, according to a new IHS Screen Digest Games Intelligence Report from information and analysis provider IHS.

Cologne -- The 2011 Game Developers Conference Europe (GDC Europe) kicked off Gamescom 2011 with a successful showing and a final attendee count of more than 2,100 game professionals representing 57 countries. Professionals from all areas of the game industry convened throughout the three day conference and engaged on trends and new opportunities among peers. Many speakers stayed in Cologne, Germany to showcase their titles to the media and public at Gamescom, which has also seen record growth.

Cologne -- The world of interactive entertainment has once again descended on Cologne, Germany for Gamescom 2011. Over 250,000 gamers have flooded the city in search of hands-on with some of the biggest games of this year and beyond. For the third year running, the trade show and event highlight has increased its exhibitor numbers and international flavor by a wide margin. Over 550 exhibitors (up from 505 in 2010) from almost 40 countries (up from 33 countries in 2010) will be presenting their new products and innovative developments on Cologne's trade show grounds. The proportion of foreign companies at gamescom is now 50 per cent (up from 45% in 2010).

Cologne -- Sony Computer Entertainment held its annual press conference to kick off Gamescom 2011 in Germany. The game publisher announced to a packed crowd that it will introduce dedicated applications for Facebook, foursquare, Skype and Twitter to PlayStation Vita (PS Vita). The portable which will launch in Japan by the end of 2011, followed by the U.S. and Europe early next year. One of the big games for the device is Little Deviants, which you can see in action in the video below.

Watching television shows in 3D has become a regular activity for the majority of 3DTV owners, according to the latest research from the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service. According to the report, “3DTVs: Buying Intentions and Early Adopter Feedback,” two-thirds of 3DTV owners across the US and Europe are watching at least one show in 3D on a weekly basis. Forty-one percent of 3DTV owners claim to be watching shows in 3D at least once a day or several times a day.

With San Diego Comic Con 2011 now over, NcSoft has shifted its focus across the Atlantic to Gamescom, Europe's largest game expo. This annual celebration of games and entertainment takes over Cologne once again from August 17-21, and the game publisher will be there in full force - and developer ArenaNet is bringing a brand new Guild Wars 2 demo to Germany.

Electronic Arts is further expanding the universe of one of the big games of 2011, Battlefield 3, the latest shooter from DICE. Battlefield 3: The Russian novel is written by the highly decorated ex-SAS operator and best-selling author of Bravo Two Zero, Andy McNab, with co-author Peter Grimsdale. The book tells the back-story of RU Special Forces operator Dima, one of the hero soldiers featured in the Battlefield 3 single-player campaign narrative. Having first-hand experience of the drama and trauma of real war, McNab and co-author Grimsdale bring an authentic voice and heart-wrenching perspective to the story.

Rockstar Games and Team Bondi are serving up more Hollywood crime circa 1947. Several standalone cases, collectibles and challenges will be released digitally in the coming months on PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE. The four new DLC cases are "The Naked City" vice case, "A Slip of the Tongue" traffic case, "Nicholson Electroplating" arson case and “Reefer Madness” vice case.

Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) will fully restore all PlayStation Network services in the Americas, Europe/PAL territories and Asia, excluding Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea by the end of this week. That means everything will be operational before E3 2011. The company will also resume Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PlayStation 3 (PS3), PSP (PlayStation Portable), VAIO and other PCs.  Details for Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea as well as the remaining services on Qriocity will be announced as they become available. Gamers will be able to swing away in online games like MLB 11: The Show.
