The biggest names in basketball are battling for a chance to take home the NBA trophy. Although their bank accounts dwarf that of the average gamer, NBA All-Stars do have something in common with videogame fans. They log a lot of their free time playing games online on Xbox Live or PlayStation Network.

I know Pierre already has his thoughts posted on FIFA Street, but I felt compelled to follow up with a counterpoint.  After all, EA Sports’ arcade revival is a pretty big deal, especially in the face of FIFA Soccer 12, which is essentially a perfected version of the sport digitally, right down to the league options and style of play on the field.  FIFA Street is an opposite to that, relying on a more trick-laden fast-paced style where the yellow and red cards don’t apply, and it’s all about getting the ball in the goal.  That should be good enough, right?  So why isn’t it?

Fans of soccer, soccer video games, and FIFA especially should be excited for FIFA Street. Excited not just for the game, but for the page turned by its parent franchise—the exaggerated style of past iterations has been put on the shelf in favor of sober depiction, though that isn't where the game pans out as a great sports experience.

EA Sports has partnered with the Leo Messi Foundation, a popular street football field in Barcelona will be brought back to life through a complete upgrade and refurbishment in 2012. The field, located in the Bon Pastor neighborhood of Barcelona and in disrepair for several years, will be outfitted with a new state-of-the-art surface, side boards, goals and much more, creating a high-quality and safe environment for the youth of Barcelona to enjoy. Messi serves as the cover athlete and ambassador for the FIFA games and this initiative was timed with the launch of the new FIFA Street game.

With FIFA 13 still a long ways off, EA Sports is offering soccer fans a reprieve with the new FIFA Street relaunch. Just as Electronic Arts went back to the original name for SSX last month, the game developer is taking a fresh approach to arcade soccer and eliminating the numerology in the title. The community has already gotten a kick out of the free FIFA Street demo to near-record levels of global excitement. More than 2.1 million people have downloaded the demo in the past two weeks, making FIFA Street the second most downloaded demo—behind only FIFA Soccer 12—released by EA Sports over the past year.
