You may have heard about Microsoft upcoming first person shooter called Halo 4, which is releasing this Fall. We are only three weeks away from E3 and new details have started to emerge. Some are predictable, but the latest multiplayer details will catch your eye.

Halo 4 fans won’t have to wait until November 6th to explore the new Halo 4 universe. Tor Books, an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, will release the second novel in the Kilo-Five Trilogy”written by bestselling novelist and renowned game writer Karen Traviss earlier. HALO: THE THURSDAY WAR will ship in hardcover alongside a simultaneous audio edition on October 2, 2012, giving gamers a full month to explore the universe that Microsoft and 343 Industries is creating based on Bungie’s game franchise.

It seems that every PAX event has a huge presence from Red 5 and their product Firefall.  Last year at PAX Prime, they had one of the largest booths on the floor, along with plenty of banners and a huge power drill at one of the entrances, which was running every hour on the hour.  The team is obviously thrilled about the game, and it's getting a bigger and bigger community as it goes along.  During PAX East, we stopped by their booth to get the skinny on what's happening with the game.

The countdown has begun for one of the big games of 2012. Microsoft and 343 Industries are developing Halo 4, the hotly anticipated sequel that will ship on November 6, 2012. Taking control of the franchise with Bungie developing an original franchise for Activision, 343 Industries shows what’s in store with the start of a new trilogy in the video below.

ORLANDO -- Over the course of the three day Red Bull LAN invitational training camp, top professional players from Blizzard Entertainment’s global eSports staple, StarCraft II and competitive players of Halo: Reach engaged in intense, focused practice in a specially-created arena at Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida, testing new strategies, refining techniques, facing rivals and pushing the limits of their stamina in preparation for tournament play. Attending from the Halo: Reach circuit were teams Status Quo – led by Red Bull athletes and Red Bull LAN alums Ian “Enable” Wyatt and Mike “Flamesword” Chavez, team Instinct, deemed “The God Squad” by their fans, and team Dynasty – who headed to Orlando to show they’re ready to rule the 2012 tournament circuit. It’s been nearly five years since fans last saw Master Chief helm the "Halo" saga, but things have sure changed since then. Bungie, the original creators of the franchise, are no longer working on the game. 343 Industries is now helming the project and is shaping the next generation of "Halo" saga with all the games shifting from the Forerunner saga to the Reclaimer saga.

Tor Books has released Halo: Primordium, the second novel in acclaimed science fiction author Greg Bear’s Forerunner Saga, a prequel series to the hugely successful Halo video game franchise for the Xbox 360.  An unabridged audio book edition will publish simultaneously with the novel.

After weeks of voting, Major League Gaming (MLG) Pro Players have chosen the best of 2011.  MLG has revealed the winners of the 2011 MLG Pros’ Choice Awards. Pros voted on each other in various categories across three MLG 2011 Pro Circuit titles - Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Halo: Reach to determine the best of the best. The Stride Longest Lasting Player awards went to Naniwa (Starcraft II), Jkap (Call of Duty: Black Ops) and Pistola (Halo: Reach), while the breakout player awards were given to Leenock (Starcraft II), John (Call of Duty: Black Ops) and Formal (Halo: Reach).

Major League Gaming (MLG) concluded a record-breaking 2011 season tonight at the Pro Circuit National Championships in Providence, Rhode Island. The best players from around the globe squared off in a three-day, double-elimination video game tournament from November 18 through 20th competing for championship glory and more than $600,000 in prizes and stipends. At the end of the intense competition, the top players and teams emerged victorious. One of the top Halo: Reach teams was Believe the Hype and Erick “Snipedown” Wrona talks about pro gaming and MLG in this exclusive video interview below.

When Bungie bid farewell last year with the release of Halo: Reach, that should’ve been the end of the franchise, yes?  Ha, yeah right.  This is a big moneymaker for Microsoft and they weren’t about to let the series go quietly into that good night.  So, along with announcing the forthcoming Halo 4 (and thus opening the door for a new trilogy), the company also confirmed its high-definition remake of the original that started it all, Halo: Combat Evolved.  So, now that it’s here, is it a fond tribute to everything Master Chief, or an insult?

LOS ANGELES – Red Bull expanded its second pro gaming LAN by inviting StarCraft II players to its Santa Monica studio, in addition to its Halo: Reach gamers. At the three-day event, the Red Bull Gaming roster consisted of two of its most accomplished and upcoming players including three-time national championship winner, Dave “Walshy” Walsh, Ian “Enable” Wyatt, Clete “Assault” LoRusso, Mike “Flamesword” Chaves, and Aaron “Ace” Elam. Joining the line-up at the Red Bull LAN were Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Austin “Mikwen” McCleary, Brett “Naded” Leonard, Justin “Pistola” Deese, Jason “Lunchbox” Brown, Justin “Roy” Brown, and Tom “Ogre2” Ryan. There are a lot of cool retro collectibles making the rounds these days, whether they're classic gaming posters, packaged game consoles that feature various classic games that you can play at any time, and various other things.  But one cool thing we noticed over the weekend was over at the 72 Pins website -- classic NES retro art printed onto cartridges.  The only catch?  This art is based on more current game releases.

For the first time ever, players of Blizzard Entertainment's popular real-time strategy game StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will come from around the world to join an all star Halo: Reach line-up at the next Red Bull LAN in Santa Monica, California from September 30 – October 2. Twelve of the world’s best StarCraft II players (four from each of the game’s races – Terran, Protoss, and Zerg) will join three of the league’s most dominant Halo: Reach teams in one of competitive gaming’s most sought-after training programs. For 10 hours each day over three days, some of the sharpest minds and fastest fingers in the world will gather at an innovative training facility developed by Red Bull to broaden their skills and prepare for their upcoming professional gaming competitions.

Major League Gaming (MLG) experienced an all-time high as 138,000 peak concurrent online stream viewers watched the Raleigh Pro Circuit competition held August 26-28, breaking previous MLG records. Viewers from 173 countries watched the live streams and more than 3 million hours of video were consumed throughout the weekend. Working with Streamworks, MLG was able to deliver uninterrupted 720p high definition, high-quality video streams of the  competition  despite Hurricane Irene. Streamworks will continue to work with MLG to deliver live and on-demand coverage of all 2011 and 2012 Pro Circuit competitions.

We've got good news and bad news regarding cars in the upcoming racing game Forza Motorsport 4.  The bad news is that you won't be able to drive Porsches in the game.  EA had the cars yanked from Microsoft's racer due to the fact they hold some rights for their Need For Speed series.  But fret not, for you'll be cornering in Forza with one of the better vehicles in Porsche's place -- the Warthog from Halo.

The September/October issue of IEEE Software on “Engineering Fun” tackles that challenging question from several perspectives. According to guest editors Clark Verbrugge, a McGill University computer science professor, and Paul Kruszewski, president of GRIP Entertainment, games tap into psychological, aesthetic, and social pleasures that are extremely difficult to quantify and predict in a computer science context.
