The idea behind E3 was to showcase the latest and brightest games of 2012, but there are always a few games that disappoint us. Some games on our list made serious changes to their formula, and not for the better. Other games took center stage at E3 when they shouldn’t have. There were many games at E3, but here is our top five list of disappointments.

When it comes to games made specifically for the PlayStation Move, Sony could’ve done better.  Some of the lamer party and dancing efforts are easily forgettable; Kung Fu Rider stunk worse than a slice of Gouda cheese left in an unplugged fridge for a week; and Medieval Moves was too jittery for its own good.  But now, two years after its initial announcement, we have a game that actually makes the PlayStation Move look likable, even though using it actually reveals a pretty big weakness.

Thanks to Joss Whedon, Disney will soon forget the epic flop known as John Carter. The director already has an international hit on his hands. Marvel’s The Avengers has made over $280 million overseas already – earning more than Iron Man, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger made during their entire theatrical runs. Whedon is taking everything in stride, as you can tell with this tongue-in-cheek video interview below.

Although many people have upgraded to Blu-ray Discs, the majority of Americans still view movies on DVD. While the overall home entertainment market is still hurting as more people rent than buy movies, blockbuster event movies still entice purchases. Warner Home Video had a very good year with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I and II dominating the chart. Disney has a trio of kid-friendly movies, including Cars 2, which is featured in the exclusive video interview with Owen Wilson and Eddie Izzard below. And it's worth noting that every movie, save for Bridesmaids, had a videogame tie-in for gamers to further explore these worlds.

It’s over for Harry Potter. The final film’s record box office opening was shattered by Activision’s launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The new game from Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games beat out Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (now out on Blu-ray) as well as the reigning game champion, Treyarch’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. Modern Warfare 3 sold over 6.5 million copies in just the US and UK and generated over $400 million in its first 24 hours at retail, according to Charttrack and retail customer sell-through information.

The world of Harry Potter comes to life in New York City. In celebration of the Blu-ray release of the final Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, on November 12 and 13 the International Quidditch Association (IQA) will host the 2011 Quidditch World Cup (QWC). Nintety-five college quidditch teams will descend on New York City to compete in a live action-packed sporting event, best described as “a cross between the Super Bowl and a medieval festival.” The two days will feature 450 games with live music, entertainers, food and drink vendors, and many other exciting events.

While Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 rules the box office, the movie franchise will have a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. In addition, plenty of cosplay attendees will be dressed as their favorite characters from the books and films. This shows how the franchise is far from over for Warner Bros., Electronic Arts, and others to cash in for years to come.

Warner Bros. can’t be happy that Harry Potter is finally over. But with the final movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 breaking every box office record in site, at least it’s getting one last bang for its buck. (And that doesn’t include the upcoming Blu-ray release of the final film as well as a complete collection Blu-ray likely hitting stores just in time for Christmas.) The record ticket sales do have one major downside, theater-goers are bypassing the 3D screenings of the movie in droves. But this box office bonanza is good news for Electronic Arts, which has a brand new game on store shelves to capitalize on the theatrical rush and this fall’s home entertainment release.
