Long before actor Masi Oka broke into Hollywood with the NBC TV hit, “Heroes,” his work had been seen by millions of people on the big screen. It’s just that they didn’t know it. Oka spent years as a programmer for George Lucas’ Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) writing hundreds of thousands of lines of code. It was his programming that allowed ILM to bring the water effects to life in films like The Perfect Storm. In fact, even though he doesn’t actively write code for ILM any more, his technology can still be seen on the big screen in films like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. While Oka is currently starring in the CBS hit, “Hawaii Five-0,” he’s using his programming background to actively develop original video games aimed at the Japanese audience. The tech guru and self-professed gamer talks about his latest projects in this exclusive interview.

Over the years, some fascinating games based in the Wild West have come about, featuring heroes riding tall in the saddle and wearing cowboy hats to signify that they mean business.  While some have fared better than others (like Paradox’s fascinating but limited Lead and Gold for PlayStation 3), developers have no doubt tried their darndest to capture the essence of the likes of Sergio Leone and other influences to create the best “Wild West” experience.

Every year, video game companies go all out at one specific event – the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which takes place every year in Los Angeles around June.  Here, companies like to show off what lies ahead in the next twelve to fifteen months, big projects, small uprisings, little advancements to their hardware…that sort of thing.  We’ve been to a lot of shows now, and they’ve been impressive, but E3 2012 should be an even bigger year, thanks to what the companies are bringing.

Billy and Jimmy Lee's impact on video games has been quite impressive over the years, starting with the duo's debut in Double Dragon in arcades well over 20 years ago.  Since that time, they've starred in countless iterations for the game, including a popular NES game and, as of late, an XBLA port of the original coin-op (though it's no longer available due to rights issues).  This summer, they're on the way back to the gaming scene for yet another comeback with Double Dragon Neon, Majesco's upcoming beat-em-up for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.  We recently caught up with Pete Rosky to chat about what to expect from this revival.

While only half of the respondents to ABI Research’s Technology Barometer survey claimed to rent video games, which are usually game console centric, as compared to DVD and Blu-ray movies, these respondents averaged a considerably higher monthly spend rate at $23, compared to $16 for DVD and Blu-ray. This average spend also eclipsed monthly premium Video on Demand rentals from pay-TV service providers ($20) – only monthly expenditures at movie theaters and restaurants (“eating out”) were higher amongst respondents who participated in those activities, at $27 and $67, respectively.

Once you see one Dynasty Warriors game, you’ve pretty much seen them all, right?  Let’s be honest, over the years, the countless Warriors games that Tecmo Koei has released haven’t diverted much, save for the Gundam games, which wraps the familiar beat-em-up gameplay around the popular anime universe.  And even there, repetitiveness is starting to kick in.  Thankfully, it’s believed that the development team has listened to the fans and is throwing in some new elements to keep things interesting.  While Warriors Orochi 3 can’t shake the same old “diabolically kill hundreds” formula that’s been in the series for years, some new elements keep it from feeling like the same old game.

I love The Walking Dead TV series.  What’s not to love?  Even with the drastic changes that have taken place with season 2 (mostly with the departure of producer Frank Darabont), it’s retained all the awesome intensity and scares of the comic book series.  With that, Telltale Games has followed suit with the first of its five-part Walking Dead game saga, one that deviates from events in the show, opting instead to tell its own scary tale.  And you know what?  It’s a damn good one.
