The LEGO Group is hoping to lure new gamers of all ages to its first massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game, LEGO Universe Online, by offering part of the gameplay experience for free. The game publisher is now welcoming new players to traverse the LEGO brick-building digital universe with its newly introduced Free to Play Zone. Fans will be able to enjoy the game for free for as long as they like, with the option to upgrade to a membership account at any time for $10 per month and receive full game access to the family-friendly game. Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow remains a huge box office draw overseas. Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has sailed past the $1 billion global box office mark and is still bringing in the treasure. The 3D movie has grossed $233.7 million domestically and $774 million internationally for a global pirate’s booty of $1,007,703,000. While Disney Interactive Studios canceled its Pirates of the Caribbean role-playing game video game tie-in to the new movie, the game publisher did release LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean to take advantage of the global sensation.

Johnny Depp in 3D helped Walt Disney Studios earn the top ranking at the box office this weekend. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides brought in over $90.1 million at 4,155 locations. The fourth film in the franchise saw nearly half of its box office booty come from more expensive 3D screenings. Pirates opened at a record 2,747 3D-enabled locations. With anticipation building for the last Harry Potter film, gamers will get one last LEGO game this fall in conjunction with the Blu-ray and DVD release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and the LEGO Group are conjuring one last LEGO Harry Potter game this fall. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 will mark the first time the franchise is making a foray onto Sony’s NGP. The new family-friendly game will also be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.

DISNEYLAND -- In what promises to be the 3D event of the season, Disney and XPAND 3D gave a lucky group of fans a first look at one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters. The companies collaborated to show the World Premiere of Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides at Disneyland. The stars all came out for the big event, including Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane, as well as Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall. The black carpet event, which cost $1,000 per ticket, raised money for the Boys & Girls Club of America in eye-popping active 3D by way of XPAND 3D’s new Infinity Large Screen System. Just in time for the new movie, gamers have LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean games across all platforms to play with.

LEGO Education will send 13 LEGO Education models to the International Space Station (ISS) on board the Space Shuttle Endeavor on April 29. The models will be used in eight educational activities that will be conducted by ISS crew and available to educators across the nation to utilize in classroom curricula. The LEGO Bricks in Space project is part of a joint outreach and educational program developed as part of the partnership between NASA and the LEGO Group to inspire children to explore science, technology, engineering, and math. Star Wars fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming year. The Star Wars film franchise is getting a new lease on life with stereoscopic 3D conversion. LucasFilm and Fox will release Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace on February 10, 2012. Subsequent 3D versions of the five remaining George Lucas films will be released, likely one a year. With gamers still playing through LucasArts’ Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, next on the horizon is the second massively multiplayer online (MMO) game Star Wars: The Old Republic from BioWare and Electronic Arts. Gamers will also be able to play LEGO Star WarsIII: The Clone Wars in 3D on Nintendo 3DS.

With Johnny Depp set to sail the seven seas as Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney Digital 3D this summer with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Disney Consumer Products charted a course for adventure as it unveiled a new toy line that captures the fantasy, action and adventure of the fourth movie from producer Jerry Bruckheimer. At a pirate-themed preview event in New York City, the Pirates of the Caribbean toy assortment from JAKKS Pacific, Inc. and new LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game and construction toys were unveiled before toy industry insiders as a preview to the American International Toy Fair. Disney Consumer Products and JAKKS Pacific also presented actor Ian McShane, who portrays new pirate character Blackbeard, with a one-of-a-kind 12-inch action figure inspired by the toy line. The film’s Academy Award-winning production designer John Myhre was also on hand as guests were treated to the reveal of a life-sized figure of Captain Jack Sparrow standing a full six feet tall and made of 150,000 LEGO bricks. Things aren’t looking good over at the Walt Disney Company’s video game division. Disney Interactive Studios has reportedly laid off half of its 700 employees this week amidst a massive redirection of game development. Despite the success of Warren Spector’s Junction Point game, Epic Mickey, the studio is refocusing its effort in the burgeoning casual online gaming space. Games like TRON: Evolution and Tangled failed to generate blockbuster sales. The company is still trying to right its ship after spending $763 million to purchase casual gaming site Playdom.

WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT – During its press gathering to celebrate the world premiere of its new animation and light show, “The Magic, the Memories and You,” which is projected onto Cinederalla’s Castle; Disney offered some new information on its new Star Wars ride. Meg Crofton, President of Walt Disney World Resort, said that Star Tours: The Adventure Continues in 3D will open on May 20, 2011 at Disney Hollywood Studios and launch the new Star Wars Weekends at Walt Disney World Resort. Star Wars fans will also get the new family-friendly LEGO Star Wars III game this March from LucasArts.
