With Apple’s big iPad 3 announcement in San Francisco, the company is ramping up production of displays across the board. Aided by expected soaring sales of its upcoming next-generation iPad, Apple in 2012 is projected to nearly double its spending on displays used in media tablets and smartphones, according to IHS iSuppli Display Materials & Systems Service research from information and analytics provi der IHS.

Nintendo used Tokyo Game Show 2011 to announce that its hot-selling Nintendo 3DS device will add 3D video recording to its 3D photo capabilities this fall. This gives consumers another option to create user-generated 3D content, following on the heels of the HTC Evo 3D from Sprint and the LG Thrill 4D from AT&T. Consumers can capture 3D video on these devices, edit them, and post them on the new Youtube 3D channel online. These devices also allow consumers to watch 3D videos, as well as trailers, shorts and feature-length movies.

Unicomm and The Bob Dowling Group have announced speakers and sessions for the second annual 3D Gaming Summit: 3D Gaming and Beyond presented in association with Variety. Scheduled for Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Hollywood & Highland Center, Hollywood, CA, the new summit will take place the same week as the 3D Entertainment Summit and LA Mobile Entertainment Summit. The gaming summit is expanding beyond 3D this year to look at some of the hottest sectors of games, including cloud gaming, mobile game and augmented reality.  Producers have also confirmed Mick Hocking, Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, as a featured speaker. Hocking oversees all 3D game development for Sony.

One of the leading global publishers of digital and social games has a full line-up of portable interactive experiences coming out this year. Among the big games is a pair of Hollywood licensed games based on Immortals and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Gameloft also is bringing hit Ubisoft franchises back to mobile with Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Driver. Other key titles include LEGO Batman, Gangstar Rio: City of Saints, and Wild West Guns. At the 2011 3D Entertainment Summit, part of CE Week in New York, Vice President of Marketing for LG Mobile Phones, Tim O’Brien, delivered remarks on technology’s important role in the evolution of entertainment. Illustrating how 3D enabled mobile devices will be the next step in the natural evolution of entertainment, O’Brien declared that user-generated content will fuel the overall 3D experience. T-Mobile flew Mike and his girlfriend to Los Angeles as the winners of the T-Mobile LG G2X E3 contest. According to IHS iSuppli, the Japan earthquake and tsunami could result in significant shortages of certain components, potentially causing pricing for these devices to increase dramatically. While there are few reports of actual damage at electronic production facilities, impacts on the transportation and power infrastructure will result in disruptions of supply, resulting in the short supply and rising prices. Components impacted will include NAND flash memory, dynamic random access memory (DRAM), microcontrollers, standard logic, liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels, and LCD parts and materials. These devices will impact gamers in everything from memory cards to Nintendo DS devices to HD TVs and LG phones.

BARCELONA, Spain (Hollywood Reporter) - The 2011 instellment of Mobile World Congress, which gathered 60,000 professionals from 200 countries, served as the official coming-out party for the next generation of Google Android smartphones and tablets.  

The Android booth featured a huge arcade section where developers from around the world showcased the next generation of mobile games. While graphics and gameplay have improved in the mobile space over the years, the new wave of smartphones and tablets will push the capabilities of these devices to the level of PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 -- and beyond even the best iPhone 4 and iPad games that are currently on the market.

BARCELONA -- Google (GOOG) and its Android operating system dominated Mobile World Congress being held this week in Barcelona as the search engine company's foray into the mobile world has quickly reached a crescendo. Google's fun green and white two story booth, complete with a smoothie juice bar and a circular slide where attendees could slide down in the middle of the booth and get their picture taken, represented a stark contrast to the more formal and stuffy business-like booths in this B2B-oriented, mobile industry show. The booth itself represented a departure from Google's normal trade show appearances, which have usually been much smaller and more utilitarian in design.

LAS VEGAS (CES) – NVIDIA’s (NVDA) new Tegra 2 mobile processor, which it just announced at CES on Wednesday, has taken CES by storm as Tegra 2-powered tablets and smartphones have dominated the major product announcements coming from CES. NVIDIA’s major wins in the tablet space has fueled a 22% surge in its stock since the first of the year. While Microsoft has been mum and has let Sony steal the spotlight when it comes to stereoscopic 3D gaming, a press release out of Korea states that Microsoft has entered into a partnership with 3D TV maker LG to market LG 55/47LX9500 LED 3D TVs alongside stereo Xbox 360 games in South Korea with the option of further expanding this marketing initiative throughout the Asia Pacific region. The program will launch this June and bundle Xbox 360 3D games with LG 3D TVs.
