COLOGNE, GERMANY (Reuters) - It's not exactly an Olympic sport - not yet, anyway - but as the London Games drew to a close this past Sunday, thousands of professional videogame players geared up for an event that for some can be as lucrative as winning a gold medal. Videogamers have gathered in Cologne, Germany this week for the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) competition, a professional videogame tournament that runs through August 19.

Curse has already garnered a large following for its professional teams.  The teams’ League of Legends Twitch.tv channel has already grabbed the attention of millions of viewers. As a fun way to kick off the project the company invited the North American team to live at the Curse CEO’s apartment in San Francisco. The team’s stream saw more than 7,000 concurrent viewers the night of July 15th, 2012 when Thieblot threw a party for the team. The Curse Gaming Apartment channel has already reached almost a million views in just the past few weeks. Each member of the team has their own stream as well attaining a combined total of more than ten million views.

The term “browser-based game” is not one that typically sits well with gamers. It brings up the repressed fact that there are tons of ignored invites on your Facebook asking you to help plant crops on Farmville, or go hold up a bank in Mafia Wars, or guide a football into the endzone in Return Man. But there is the occasional diamond in the rough, and Drakensang Online certainly shines in comparison to other games you typically play on Chrome, Firefox, or even (*shudders*) Explorer.

Riot Games was on the show floor of PAX East 2012 in Boston over Eastern weekend displaying two new Champions for League of Legends. The centaur warrior Hecarim the Shadow of War and archer Varus were introduced to legions of gamers in the Boston convention center.

Johnathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendel and Fatal1ty Brand Partner, Creative Labs, announced today that they have joined forces to produce a series of online gaming tournaments that will be streamed live.  League of Legends, as one of Fatal1ty's must-play games, was chosen to kick off these multi-title, multi-platform video game tournaments. The inaugural event will run from March 9, through March 18, 2012.

LOS ANGELES -- Riot Games today announced that over four million people play League of Legends on a daily basis, a 280% increase since Riot Games last announced the size of its League of Legends community in July 2011. With 11.5 million active monthly players and peak concurrency reaching 1.3 million, League of Legends enters its second competitive season as one of the top five PC games in North America and Europe with a registered player base of over 30 million worldwide. “It’s staggering to think about the fact that over a billion games of League of Legends have been played since launch,” said Marc Merrill, co-founder and President of Riot Games. “In 2012, we intend to deliver even more for our growing audience.”

Major League Gaming (MLG) experienced an all-time high as 138,000 peak concurrent online stream viewers watched the Raleigh Pro Circuit competition held August 26-28, breaking previous MLG records. Viewers from 173 countries watched the live streams and more than 3 million hours of video were consumed throughout the weekend. Working with Streamworks, MLG was able to deliver uninterrupted 720p high definition, high-quality video streams of the  competition  despite Hurricane Irene. Streamworks will continue to work with MLG to deliver live and on-demand coverage of all 2011 and 2012 Pro Circuit competitions.

The sixth season of the Intel Extreme Masters, the global league of the video game champions, will take off with its first Global Challenge at Gamescom 2011 in Cologne (August 17 - 21). The event will host the world's best gamers fighting for a share of $53,000 and a slot in the World Championship competition, the grand finale of each season of the league.
