When Nintendo presented its big showcase last year before the Electronic Entertainment Expo took place, it shocked the world with the announcement of the Wii U, a new game console that would take advantage of an innovative new touch screen controller.  However, when it came to hitting the floor and seeing the Wii U in action, most people think it came up a bit short, despite the interesting presentations.  This time around, Nintendo has a chance to really show attendees what their next-gen system is made of.  So how can they capitalize?  We’ve got a few ideas…

Mario has some new games heading to Nintendo 3DS and Kirby is celebrating his 20th birthday. Nintendo will launch New Super Mario Bros. 2, a new side-scrolling Mario adventure for Nintendo 3DS, this summer. Later in the year, Nintendo will mark the 20th anniversary of the Kirby game series with a special compilation game disc for the Wii system. Other content on the way includes a system update for Nintendo 3DS, re-runs of the popular Kid Icarus anime videos as well as the May 20 launch of Mario Tennis Open.

Mario Tennis has almost become an institution for Nintendo, in a way.  First introduced years ago on the Nintendo 64, it has since become an infatuation with Nintendo players, an accessible tennis game with multiplayer appeal and plenty of mini-games to keep players intrigued.  Now that tradition continues in the 3D realm, as Nintendo is bringing the series to the 3DS this May.

It’s inevitable.  Ever since the success of their first outing a few years ago, Sega’s Sonic and Nintendo’s Mario have managed to shake off their whole 16-bit rivalry in favor of collaborative sporting efforts, usually revolving around the Olympic games.  Like clockwork, just in time to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Sega has released yet another compilation featuring the duo, as well as their respective casts, in 50 various mini-game sporting events.  It sounds like a fun time.  Unfortunately, for the most part, it isn’t.

Driven by fast-selling software Nintendo 3DS sells more in its first nine months than Wii did, capping a very good 2011 for the game maker. Whether they were on the go or at home, whether they played in 2D on the TV or in glasses-free 3D in their hands, gamers of all ages celebrated the holidays with Mario and Zelda. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo 3DS not only became the fastest-selling titles in the history of their respective franchises when they launched, but they are now also the first Nintendo 3DS titles to sell 1 million units each in the United States. On the console side, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which also broke launch records, became the 45 Wii title to sell more than 1 million units in the U.S.

Mention the words "Shigeru Miyamoto" to any given gamer out there, and they'll likely rattle off their favorite moment from a Mario or Legend of Zelda game, in great detail.  There's no question that the legendary designer has left his mark on more than one occasion, serving millions of happy gamers at a time.  However, it looks like he might he slowing down as he approaches his late 50's, as rumors indicate he'll be "retiring".  But to what extent?

At E3, I took a Nintendo booth tour. I saw the Wii U, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Kid Icarus--the list goes on. The one title that stood out to me, that I still wanted some hands-on time with was Super Mario 3D Land. I am the 99% that likes MOST Mario-themed game and salivates every time a new title hits a system. So that’s why when I was only able to sample a few levels in the new platformer--I wanted, nay, I needed to play more.

To celebrate the launch of the Super Mario 3D Land game for the Nintendo 3DS hand-held system, Nintendo gave fans in New York City a chance play the game early and live the life of Mario in real life. Gamers were able to play inside Mario’s 3D world with life size warp pipes, trampoline coin jumps and a flag pole finale. Rocker John Bon Jovi brought his kids out to see Mario in person in Times Square.

Okay, Battlefield 3 fanboys, you got me. It is a little unfair. Battlefield 3 has no split-screen gaming. Does it mean that it won't be a great title? Absolutely not. I get pumped up every time I hear Jay-Z's "99 Problems" mixed in with the awesome "in-game" footage in the commercial. It's unavoidable while watching any football game on Sunday. And positive reviews are pouring in. Like most of you, I already have my copy pre-ordered. And I'm excited--but, a little less excited than I am about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Have you ever wanted to know virtually everything there ever was that went into creating one of the worst movies ever made? Do you just yearn to know why normally smart people make some stupid decisions that result in a hot steaming mess of personified WTF? Do you at all wax nostalgic for the 90's, a time when bad movies had some type of special I don't know what that make them somehow infinitely enjoyable in a way that science has as of yet failed to quantify? Then baby, do I have an interview to show you.

After a fast start at retail, Nintendo 3DS has experienced sluggish sales. A lack of killer apps was originally blamed, but with Legend of Zelda now on the market Nintendo decided to cut the price by $80. Starting on August 12, the Nintendo 3DS will retail for $170, down from $250. Nintendo has a strong line-up of fall titles to lure gamers, and this price cut will certainly help.

Whether you're into shooters, horror action, or family fare, Sega was the booth that offered up all of that and more in their E3 booth this week.  And regardless of which platform you spend most of your game-playing time on, you were covered there as well: Playstation, Nintendo, Xbox, even PC were almost equally represented.

The Nintendo 3DS was a big hit at E3 2011. They had many 3Ds’s set up making a quick moving line and booth babes that knew everything about the product. I was one of the first in line to try out games set to be released later this year, but when I turned around I saw hundreds of people swarming into the booth behind me. I consider one of the lucky ones to have got my hands on one of these sought on devices.

Nintendo stands by its consoles for a long time. The company continues to market its Nintendo DS Lite system despite the new Nintendo 3DS and older Nintendo DSi, and Nintendo DSi XL hardware still available on store shelves. The company has slashed the price of its DS Lite from $129 to $99 effective June 5. This move could be a precursor to a Nintendo 3DS price drop announcement at Nintendo’s E3 press conference in Los Angeles on June 7.

Sega will deliver its third straight simulation Olympics video game next year with London 2012 - The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games. Sega previously released simulations based on Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010. The game maker continues to work with International Sports Multimedia (ISM), the exclusive licensee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), on these titles. London 2012 will be available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year in conjunction with the Summer Games. But the game will be on display at E3 2011 in Los Angeles.

Though many people have decided to pick up L.A. Noire, a little game by the name of The Witcher 2:  Assassins of Kings came out on the same day. And just like the aforementioned, The Witcher 2 also garnered a lot of critical acclaim, reaching a score of 91 on Metacritic. Both that and its first title have become pretty big hits among RPG fans, praising both the storytelling and the battle mechanics. While the game is considered to be possibly the best RPG of the year, many gamers are left out of the mix as it is a PC exclusive, at least for now. But should there still be titles that are exclusive to the PC, or should those days come to an end?

REDMOND, Wash.-- Nintendo is dropping the suggested retail price of its Wii system to $149.99 and including a Mario game with the Wii hardware. Yesterday, my fellow GamerLive.TV writer Skyler Bunderson posted an article on what he thinks Nintendo needs to do going into the future. What he came up was the thing that many of us have been hearing for quite some time--Nintendo needs to have better relationships with third party developers. Sure, Nintendo needs to, as does Microsoft and Sony. One reason why the Xbox 360 continues to be so well-liked by developers is the ease of development on the system--something that Sony was under fire for in the earlier stage of PS3 development.
