Big Games of 2012: Sackboy Hits the Road In LittleBigPlanet Karting (PlayStation 3)

It’s inevitable with all “cute” franchises.  Eventually, someone’s going to get the idea of making a “kart” game, where familiar characters can get behind the wheel of a race car and (playfully) compete against others through a similar universe, one that’s been in previous games.  Mario’s done it countless of times, Crash Bandicoot did it a couple, and several other clones have emerged over the years as well.  Joining the fray is LittleBigPlanet Karting, collaboration between Media Molecule and the game’s main developer, United Front Games – the same team behind ModNation Racers.  But don’t go dismissing this as just another knock-off.  This one has a lot of kick behind it.

Asphalt Injection Review (PlayStation Vita)

It seems no matter what kind of system is launching, Ubisoft and Gameloft are on standby with some version of its long-standing Asphalt racing series.  Not that there’s anything wrong with having an arcade racer on hand, especially one where you can ram into opponents and send them crashing to a halt, Burnout-style.  But it almost seems like the development of these games has become by the numbers, wherein going for a fresh approach would’ve been more welcome.  Alas, Asphalt Injection doesn’t do that, and so it stands as an “average” pick for the system’s launch today.

Big Games of 2012: Sleeping Dogs Explores Gritty Hong Kong Underworld

United Front Games (UFG), the developer behind Sony’s hit franchise, ModNation Racers, has been busy recreating Hong Kong for its new game, Sleeping Dogs. Originally called True Crimes: Hong Kong with Activision on board as the publisher, game was canceled by Activision and then picked up by Square Enix. Sleeping Dogs is now scheduled to ship for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in the second half of 2012. Check out the game in action in the trailer below.

PlayStation Vita: Sony Takes a Road Trip with ModNation: Racers

Sony’s San Diego Studio has been working on ModNation Racers: Road Trip, a portable PlayStation Vita incarnation of the hit PlayStation 3 game. The PS Vita game allows players to connect online to share and play any creations from both the PS3 game and the new travel-sized version. Gamers can quickly create karts and tracks and then jump into competitive ad hoc races against friends (there’s on online racing support). The developer walks through the new game in this exclusive video below.

With Microsoft kicking off E3 in disappointing fashion, it was up to Sony to try to get things back on a happier track with a press conference that would feature better games and other content. Sony had a lot on its plate at E3. They suffered a network outage that lasted over a month due to it being hacked, leaving many PS3 owners upset. Plus, they had a new piece of hardware to show off. Activision Revives True Crime Franchise

Activision is reviving the franchise that’s its answer to RockStar Games’ Grand Theft Auto videogame juggernaut. The publisher announced a reboot of the True Crime franchise with a new developer. Vancouver, British Columbia-based United Front Games has been working on the new open-world game inspired by classic Hollywood and Asian cinema style action thrillers.
