Throughout the history of video games, the oldest stereotype surrounding the industry has always been do violent video games affect player behavior and personality. It is a known fact that people who play games are exposed to more violence than the average consumer. From nuking entire civilization to obliterating players online, it’s has become more and more common now that games are more focus on squarely providing violent action. For this reason alone, parents have long held an underlining negative attitude towards the industry and those who stand by it, but is this criticism injustice or have developers gone to far? Should government step in?

The organizers of Classic Gaming Expo announced today that the 2012 Classic Gaming Expo will be held August 11 and 12 at the recently renovated Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The show’s historic ties with Las Vegas, and specifically the Plaza Hotel, made it the obvious choice to play host to this year’s convention.

Yesterday, at a press event in Las Vegas, Nevada, Namco Bandai unveiled its line-up for 2012, with some interesting new projects, including a Dragon Ball Z game for Kinect and an official release date for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (coming this September).  However, it also revealed what had been rumored for months – that a PC port of the hit game Dark Souls is finally coming this August.  Now, the only question is whether users can deal with the service it’s being saddled with.

I have to be honest, if a series feels like it’s sitting in a rut, going through the same motions over and over with hardly any evolution in gameplay, I actually cheer on the idea of revitalization.  And, boy, was Ridge Racer in need of that.  Ridge Racer V wasn’t a bad game in itself, and Ridge Racer 6 had its moments, but since that point, the series has sat in neutral with its over-drifting system and lack of anything fundamentally new.  Even Ridge Racer on the PlayStation Vita felt like a half-finished retread, despite its online capabilities.  But the second you pop in Bugbear’s Ridge Racer Unbounded, that mundane feeling fades away.  This isn’t the same old ride around the block.  It’s an entirely new beast.

For all those times we praise certain series for making changes, there are also those instances where we’re wondering why a developer made such changes in the first place.  As great as some of the previous Final Fantasy games have been, many have been hunkering for the classic days of SNES releases like Final Fantasy III and so forth, rather than the big-budgeted Final Fantasy XIII.  Namco, thankfully, hasn’t changed too much when it comes to its Tales franchise, and the latest entry in the series, Tales of Graces F, clearly shows that.  It’s old-school love like we seldom get anymore.

There are games that require you to meet certain criteria to get the most out of them, and then there are “grind fests”, those gaming experiences where you have to toil away at a game, making certain adjustments and completing mission after mission until you get that proper tool that allows everything to click together, making the experience either worth it or leaving you wondering if it was worth the effort.  Armored Core V, the latest in From Software’s long-running mech series, easily fits in the latter category, and rather than being a mech game that provides the kind of mech action that a casual audience can get into, it instead directs its attention to the die-hards that live and breathe customization and working with others to trash the opposition.  There’s nothing entirely wrong with that, except it really limits the game’s appeal.

I just have something to share with Namco right now.  If you really want your anime franchises to stand out as a fighting game, call in Capcom and have them do Dragon Ball Z vs. Naruto.  It’d easily be the best crossover game since the old Jump Superstars games on DS.  Sigh…it’ll probably be a while before something like that is even considered, so for the time being, we’ll manage with the 3D fighters Namco has to offer.  Its latest, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations, continues to buck the trend, and, when it comes to its key audience, is quite effective.

03.23.12

I’ve spent quite a bit of time with Capcom’s Street Fighter x Tekken, not only because I wanted to make sure to test out the online play and the additional PS3-exclusive fighters (y’know, “fat” Mega Man” and Cole McGrath from Infamous), but also because it’s not just another typical crossover fighter.  Yes, it combines characters from both Capcom and Namco’s respective fighting universes, but its controls are set up a little differently, rather than relying on the mechanics that worked so well in the Marvel vs. Capcom games.  That’s not a complaint by any means.  In fact, I can’t think of a hardcore fighting fan that wouldn’t dig into this thing like a treasure chest.  Casual fans, too.

When it comes to racing games on the PlayStation Vita, you have a lot to choose from, between the kart racing shenanigans in ModNation Racers, the futuristic action of Wipeout 2048 and the sim Formula 1 madness of F1 2011.  But it wouldn’t be a launch party without Ridge Racer, and Namco has managed to push another edition out the door in time to appease the PS Vita owning masses.  Now the question is, is it enough?

Namco Bandai Games America has released a free update for SoulCalibur V on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The title update contains new online ranked game search optimization, gameplay tweaks, character balance adjustments for the entire roster based on player feedback. This updated version will be used in the SoulCalibur V Worldwide Finals taking place on April 10, 2012 at the Cosmopolitan hotel and casino in Las Vegas.

Why am I not a bigger fan of role-playing games?  Because outside of team aspects or any given new features, they mostly play the same.  Cast an attack, prepare for a counter-attack, use a special attack to finish the battle, repeat.  Yeah, there’s story too, but it seems built more for folks that are fans rather than the ones that aren’t.  That said, there are exceptions to the rule, and I’m happy to report that Namco’s Tales of the Abyss remains a good one.

03.17.12

The Tekken series has been brawling for years now, but over the last few months, Namco Bandai has really been pushing the series hardcore.  Last year’s Tekken Hybrid turned out to be a cool little collection of stuff, including Tekken Tag Tournament HD and a demo for Tekken Tag Tournament 2; and this past week’s release of Street Fighter x Tekken has gone over moderately well with the hardcore crowd.  But let’s not forget the portable front, where Tekken 3D Prime Edition has left a little dent as well.

At the Game Developers Conference, there are plenty of surprises making the rounds, with new reveals happening and information dropping on new projects.  Sony was expecting to make some PlayStation Vita announcements over the course of the week, big new games that would carry their new handheld system into the fall system.  However, thanks to a leak over at Play.com, we have an idea of what these projects could very well be…

There really is no game series out there right now that’s like the Katamari Damacy series.  Originally started on the PlayStation 2 and literally rolling ever since, each game has pretty much been the same lunacy over and over, with the Prince of All Cosmos following his arrogant father’s commands and rolling up objects to turn into stars.  The concept hasn’t really changed, but at least each game has offered its fair share of lunacy between wacky presentation and simplistic ball-forming fun.  The PlayStation Vita version, Touch My Katamari, follows the same trend, though an interesting new shape-shifting feature is worth playing around with.

02.22.12

Who doesn’t want to be a ninja?  Don’t sit there and tell me you’ve never dreamed of the day of being insane enough to throw stars at objects with utmost accuracy, or get the sneak-up on someone from behind to subdue them.  Well, very few games these days make you truly feel like a ninja, since the Tenchu series has fallen by the wayside.  To make up for this, Namco Bandai has brought in Acquire, Tenchu's development team, to produce Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen to the PlayStation Vita, giving gamers the opportunity to go all ninja-like with a vengeful assassin named, well, Zen.

No Bones about it – ha, I made a funny – J.J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek in 2009 was quite the successful one, despite all the lens flare.  The movie reintegrated interest in the franchise, thanks to a great young cast and a story that actually made sense to fans.  And with a sequel on the way next year, we can only wonder what next great step is gonna happen within the video game realm.  Well, thanks to Namco Bandai games, we know.  Set phasers to stun-ning.

Consoles and PC's have had a slow month interms of new AAA quality games arriving for your respected platform. While January got off to a slow start, it quickly recovered to bring us high quality tittles through digital distribution. Plenty of great downloadable arcade tittles were made available through XBLA, PSN and Steam, giving us many hidden gems on the digital marketplace. Let's look back at the games we reviewed over the past month.

It's a novel idea that's really catching on in the App Store -- re-releasing old-school arcade games as part of a collection, then offering potential buyers the option to choose what games they want to keep.  Capcom's done it, Atari has done it, and Farsight is working on it with its Pinball Arcade (which we previewed).  But we're surprised that Namco has taken so long to warm up to the idea, especially with its countless Museum releases.  Well, it finally came through with Namco Arcade, a game that has the "try before you buy" method with a few of its offerings.  So why does it feel like it wasn't fully thought out?

When SoulCalibur IV came out a few years ago for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, some players were disappointed by the series' jump to next-gen, even with the addition of nifty Star Wars characters.  (C'mon, Darth Vader versus Mitsurugi was pretty damn epic.)  But luckily, Namco realizes that some better balancing was needed, and SoulCalibur V brings it in spades, between some great new characters and the kind of multiplayer that will keep you addicted for some time.  It's just a shame that the single player content couldn't really keep up...
