Throughout the history of video games, the oldest stereotype surrounding the industry has always been do violent video games affect player behavior and personality. It is a known fact that people who play games are exposed to more violence than the average consumer. From nuking entire civilization to obliterating players online, it’s has become more and more common now that games are more focus on squarely providing violent action. For this reason alone, parents have long held an underlining negative attitude towards the industry and those who stand by it, but is this criticism injustice or have developers gone to far? Should government step in?

The countdown has begun for one of the big games of 2012. Microsoft and 343 Industries are developing Halo 4, the hotly anticipated sequel that will ship on November 6, 2012. Taking control of the franchise with Bungie developing an original franchise for Activision, 343 Industries shows what’s in store with the start of a new trilogy in the video below.

SALT LAKE CITY –Epic Games’ Chair Entertainment is pushing the world of Infinity Blade beyond the Unreal Engine 3 game for Apple iPhone 4S and iPad tablets. The game developer has launched Infinity Blade: Awakening, a novella written by #1 New York Times bestselling fantasy author Brandon Sanderson (The Way of Kings, Mistborn, The Wheel of Time). The San Diego Convention Center will be overloaded with massively multiplayer online (MMO) games this year as game publishers tease new games like BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic and Gazillion’s Marvel Universe. Plus, established MMO games like World of Warcraft and City of Heroes will focus on new content.

Microsoft, Bungie and Tor Books have enlisted Karen Traviss to write a new trilogy of Halo books that will explore the Halo Universe in the wake of the final events of Halo 3.  Halo novels published by Tor have sold over a million combined copies to date, and the entire Halo catalogue is now available in mass market paperback from Tor.  Along Karen's debut Halo novel, Tor is also publishing the second novel from legendary science fiction author Greg Bear's Halo Forerunner trilogy in 2012.  Halo: Glasslands will be published on October 25, 2011. An unabridged audiobook edition will publish simultaneously with the new novel.

Random House Publishing Group has greenlit a novel based on THQ’s and Kaos Studio’s 2011 first-person shooter game, Homefront. The novel is set in the Homefront universe and co-written by John Milius (Red Dawn and Oscar Award-winning Apocalypse Now) and New York Times bestselling author Raymond Benson (author of two Metal Gear Solid books and multiple James Bond novels). The book will be published by Random House’s Del Rey imprint, and arrive in early 2011 to coincide with the release of the first Homefront game.

Electronic Arts and 38 Studios will debut Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the company’s first title previously referred to under the codename “Project Mercury,” at Comic Con 2010. Reckoning is an epic, open-world role-playing game set in Amalur, a mysterious and magical new fantasy world created by New York Times best-selling author R. A. Salvatore. Brought to life visually through the trademark visceral style of renowned artist and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, Reckoning brings a new level of intense action combat to the RPG genre. The game is being developed under the leadership of Ken Rolston, lead designer of the critically acclaimed RPGs Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and is scheduled for release in fall 2011.
