Warner Bros. Pictures is set to release the first part of director Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14, 2012. The 3D epic is being shot in collaboration with 3ality Technica in New Zealand. One of the big movies of 2012, the first trailer for The Hobbit is below. And you can bet that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has a new game set in this movie universe coming in time for Christmas.

LOS ANGELES -- Warner Home Video celebrated the release of all three of Peter Jackson’s visual masterpieces on Blu-ray in a 15-disc collection entitled The Lord of the Rings The Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition. To celebrate the occasion, Warner held a countdown to Middle-earth Midnight Madness celebratory event at a Best Buy in West Los Angeles, where actor John Noble (“Fringe") was on hand to interact with fans who dressed in costumes to be the first to own the new movies. Gamers can see Noble portray Leland Monroe in LA Noire. He talks about the event in the video below.

Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) will today begin a phased restoration by region of PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services.  The phased restoration will be on a country by country basis beginning in the Americas, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Middle East. The first phase of restored services for these countries and regions will include: sign-in for PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, including the resetting of passwords; restoration of online game-play across PS3 and PSP; 'Friends' category on PS3, including Friends List, chat functionality, trophy comparison, etc.; and PlayStation Home. The end result is that gamers will be able to play online games like Crysis 2 after a month-long interruption of service.

In addition to Activision’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon game and Michael Bay’s 3D July 1 movie starring Shia LaBeouf from Paramount Pictures, Hasbro has partnered with developer Jagex Limited to jointly create a new massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on the globally iconic Transformers brand. Under the agreement, the two companies are slated to launch the Transformers online game in 2012 in North America, Latin America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. Gamers can currently play Activision’s Transformers: Cybertron at War from High Moon Studios, which is also developing the new Transformers: Dark of the Moon game.

THQ announced the final addition to its cover Superstars lineup for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2011 game. Fresh from a triumphant first season on the Starz original series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand,” stars Andy Whitfield (Spartacus), Lucy Lawless (Lucretia), John Hannah (Batiatus), Viva Bianca (Ilythia), and Executive Producer and Head Writer Steven S. What do you do when you kill off most of the cast in the season one finale? You go back in time. Pre-production is underway on a six-part prequel to Starz’ hit original series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand.” Andy Whitfield, who played the title character in the series, will appear in the prequel briefly, but Lucy Lawless and John Hannah take center stage in this story of the rise of the House of Batiatus and its champions before Spartacus arrives as a captured Thracian slave.  With the title still to be determined, the prequel will begin production this summer in New Zealand, and is slated to air on Starz in January 2011.

One of the big games of 2010, and one of the biggest PC games of the year, finally has a release date. Blizzard Entertainment announced that its highly anticipated real-time strategy game, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, will arrive in stores throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Mexico, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau starting on July 27, 2010. Players will also be able to purchase StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty directly from Blizzard Entertainment shortly after the retail launch.

LOS ANGELES – As the Avatar DVD and Blu-ray Disc release broke records in stores, the film's producer Jon Landau was a keynote speaker at the inaugural 3D Gaming Summit. The producer who ushered in this new phenomenon of 3D in theaters and on game consoles talked about the future of 3D in Hollywood and in videogames. Outside of the ballroom, Ubisoft’s Avatar videogame was playing on 3D TVs from Panasonic and 3D monitors running on NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology. Landau believes 3D gaming is here to stay – something Sony is betting on with its recent free firmwhere upgrade for 3D games on PlayStation 3.
