The idea behind E3 was to showcase the latest and brightest games of 2012, but there are always a few games that disappoint us. Some games on our list made serious changes to their formula, and not for the better. Other games took center stage at E3 when they shouldn’t have. There were many games at E3, but here is our top five list of disappointments.

The free-to-play market had a huge showing at E3 and was showcased at Sony’s Online Entertainment booth. Recently SOE converted all of its most popular MMOs into the model, giving new life to D.C Universe while reintroducing fans to the PlanetSide series.

Throughout the history of video games, the oldest stereotype surrounding the industry has always been do violent video games affect player behavior and personality. It is a known fact that people who play games are exposed to more violence than the average consumer. From nuking entire civilization to obliterating players online, it’s has become more and more common now that games are more focus on squarely providing violent action. For this reason alone, parents have long held an underlining negative attitude towards the industry and those who stand by it, but is this criticism injustice or have developers gone to far? Should government step in?

Consoles and PC's have had a slow month interms of new AAA quality games arriving for your respected platform. While January got off to a slow start, it quickly recovered to bring us high quality tittles through digital distribution. Plenty of great downloadable arcade tittles were made available through XBLA, PSN and Steam, giving us many hidden gems on the digital marketplace. Let's look back at the games we reviewed over the past month.

In its early days, THQ was best known as a kids game maker working with brands from Nickelodeon and Disney based on Hollywood TV shows and movies. But the Hollywood licensing business has dried up with the higher costs of development and the advances of smartphones and tablets (where those licenses still thrive). THQ isn’t exiting the games business, as had been rumored a few weeks ago. Instead, the game company is exiting the kids games business in favor of successful franchises like Saints Row.

French game publisher Ubisoft is further extending its reach into Hollywood entertainment. The game maker is producing its first animated TV series, which is based on its bestselling “Rabbids” videogame franchise. Nickelodeon has secured global broadcast rights for the series, excluding France. “Rabbids” will debut in 2013 as 26 half-hour episodes across Nickelodeons global channels.

Online game Roblox, one of the top ranked sites on the Internet for kids, recently hosted its first ever Roblox Rally at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The event that originally expected only 250 attendees, reached its max of 1,000 within the first two weeks of ticket sales. Kids ages 6-16 from all over the world, traveled from as far away as England and Hong Kong to talk with Roblox developers, hear about the latest advancements within the game, learn how to create their own virtual worlds with LUA coding language, and share ideas about donating in-game currency, called Robux, to their favorite charity.

Despite a recent string of down months in U.S. video game sales at retail this year, a new report from research firm Gartner paints a very rosy picture for the global video game industry. When adding in revenues from burgeoning online, mobile and digital gaming sectors, Gartner estimates that worldwide spending on the gaming ecosystem will exceed $74 billion in 2011, up 10.4 percent from the $67 billion spent last year. By 2015, spending is expected to reach $112 billion.

SAN FRANCISCO, California – Nickelodeon was on hand for GDC 2011 to provide an early look at its first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game, Monkey Quest. The entertainment company behind Spongebob Squarepants and Dora the Explorer is introducing its huge kids and family audience to a brand new MMO experience, which is free to play and offers microtransactions for those who want to dive deeper into the console-style gameplay.

GDC is holding the first ever Unity Track so that attendees can get a crash course on Unity. Unity's next-generation capabilities will be featured in Unity Technologies' booth and in the booth's Partner Pavilion, Aquiris Game Studio, Artificial Technology, Electrotank Inc., Exit Games, Mixamo, Nickelodeon, Noesis Interactive, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm.

SAN FRANCISCO, California -- Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon Movies and Zynga have partnered to promote the new Johnny Depp movie Rango. The March 4 computer animated movie will be marketed in-game on one of Zynga’s popular Facebook games, FrontierVille, starting today. The week-long promotion will lead up to the theatrical realse of the new family film, which takes a new look at the Western genre made popular in the Oscar-nominated True Grit.  Rango is also getting new games of his own from THQ for consoles and portables, as well as an online game world from Paramount.

The Play Label of Electronic Arts announced that its Hasbro-branded video games have sold a combined total of more than eight million units at retail globally. To date, the company has launched 20 different Hasbro brands on 18 major digital platforms since the strategic alliance between EA and Hasbro was formed in August 2007.

In a sign that may indicate a shift for interactive channels in the television landscape, TNS set-top box data measuring daily time spent viewing per set-top box revealed that TAG, the games-on-demand channel, topped 43 other linear channels available through Oceanic Time Warner Cable in Hawaii for the most minutes viewers spent watching.
