There was something about the Fatal Frame games that was utterly spectacular.  The series, which ran on PlayStation 2 across multiple releases, raised some genuine scares while avoiding the pratfalls of most survival/horror games, arming you with a special camera rather than a powerful array of weaponry.  The concept worked quite well over the years, prompting Tecmo Koei to give it another shot, this time on the Nintendo 3DS with the mostly unrelated Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir.  It was a great idea, but from the first moment it tries to take advantage of the system’s built-in augmented reality, things fall apart rather quickly.

You’ve played one Final Fantasy game, you’ve played them all, right?  Hardly.  This July, Square Enix will be providing a different twist on the genre with a game that relies just as much on music and rhythm cues as it does adventure.  Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is an upcoming 3DS game where you’ll have to tap and drag along to pre-set music themes while traveling, building energy for fights and eventually facing large enemies.  And it’ll stem from memorable themes taken from Final Fantasy themes over the years.  It’s as good as it gets for nostalgic fans.

For the longest time, Square Enix’s role-playing games have followed a usual tradition, a pre-set game pattern involving an intricate battle system or characters that could easily be adapted to, depending on their techniques and weaponry.  While fans can certainly appreciate such an approach, others can be turned off by it, merely due to the monotony.  But the company is listening, and ready to provide something a little different this summer with Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy.

Over the weekend, Nintendo held an event at San Remo Hotel in San Francisco showcasing there upcoming handheld title, Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir. Spirit Camera is a new horror – themed game for the Nintendo 3DS, which integrates the 3DS, full capabilities into this horrifying adventure.

When Epic Mickey came out for the Nintendo Wii a couple of years ago, it introduced an interesting alternative style for the legendary Walt Disney character, one with a vivid new world for him to explore and compelling new gameplay elements that let him change the world.  And though not everyone was crazy about the game being exclusive to Nintendo’s console, he certainly shook things up, opening the door for a hit franchise.  Now, in 2012, it’ll reach its fullest potential, with Epic Mickey 2 set to hit various systems, including Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  But that’s not all – it’s coming to the 3DS as well, and is set to be better than you could ever expect.

Why am I not a bigger fan of role-playing games?  Because outside of team aspects or any given new features, they mostly play the same.  Cast an attack, prepare for a counter-attack, use a special attack to finish the battle, repeat.  Yeah, there’s story too, but it seems built more for folks that are fans rather than the ones that aren’t.  That said, there are exceptions to the rule, and I’m happy to report that Namco’s Tales of the Abyss remains a good one.

The Tekken series has been brawling for years now, but over the last few months, Namco Bandai has really been pushing the series hardcore.  Last year’s Tekken Hybrid turned out to be a cool little collection of stuff, including Tekken Tag Tournament HD and a demo for Tekken Tag Tournament 2; and this past week’s release of Street Fighter x Tekken has gone over moderately well with the hardcore crowd.  But let’s not forget the portable front, where Tekken 3D Prime Edition has left a little dent as well.

Mario Tennis has almost become an institution for Nintendo, in a way.  First introduced years ago on the Nintendo 64, it has since become an infatuation with Nintendo players, an accessible tennis game with multiplayer appeal and plenty of mini-games to keep players intrigued.  Now that tradition continues in the 3D realm, as Nintendo is bringing the series to the 3DS this May.

When I played Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D for Nintendo 3DS last year, I saw some great potential out of the game, save problems and all.  But it still felt a little short-handed to me, as if Capcom was holding back for something better – in this case, Resident Evil Revelations.  And this problem has happened more than once, and is likely to happen again when next month’s Operation Raccoon City is dwarfed by Resident Evil 6 later this year.  But that’s later on.  For now, I humbly suggest you enjoy Revelations, because it’s the Resident Evil experience that the 3DS needs.

Think that Capcom isn't ready for zombie madness in 2012?  Think again. It’s set to assault its audience with not only the new Resident Evil Retribution film, but also THREE Resident Evil games.  Operation Raccoon City and Revelations (demo available now in the eShop) will be out this spring, but perhaps the big title that you'll want to check out for sure is Resident Evil 6, which has just been confirmed by the company.

Rayman Origins was, in our eyes, one of the best games of 2011.  Michel Ancel and his team made a platformer that all players could easily get into, while including a local multiplayer factor that turned it into the ultimate party experience.  Now, in 2012, the game will be thriving on the portable front, with a release slated for the PlayStation Vita around launch.  There's a version in the works for 3DS as well, though there's a catch at this point regarding it...

Driven by fast-selling software Nintendo 3DS sells more in its first nine months than Wii did, capping a very good 2011 for the game maker. Whether they were on the go or at home, whether they played in 2D on the TV or in glasses-free 3D in their hands, gamers of all ages celebrated the holidays with Mario and Zelda. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 for Nintendo 3DS not only became the fastest-selling titles in the history of their respective franchises when they launched, but they are now also the first Nintendo 3DS titles to sell 1 million units each in the United States. On the console side, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which also broke launch records, became the 45 Wii title to sell more than 1 million units in the U.S.

As a dark harbinger of things to potentially come in other markets, Sony has not been able to attract Japanese gamers with its new PlayStation (PS) Vita portable gaming device. During it’s first week at retail in Japan, the game system sold 320,000 units (although that only covered two days). But in its second week (and first full week) on store shelves, Sony enticed a meager 72,000 gamers to buy its pricey new hardware. Even the old PSP outsold the new PS Vita by 40% over Christmas.

The bitter break-up between Rock Band developer Harmonix and the game's publishing arm at Viacom has been a messy one.  Following the somewhat expensive development of The Beatles Rock Band (due to licensing) and the release of Rock Band 3, Viacom unceremoniously dumped the developer, who purchased themselves back for $50.  Ever since, the companies have been battling back and forth over payments due over the series' release and royalties.  But it looks like the final decision could be leaning in Harmonix's favor...

Years ago, the PC game Myst stood out amongst others for its time, with its dynamic visual interface, intricate puzzles and somewhat moving storyline.  Granted, it did all this without actually using real-time movement, as you walked around a pre-rendered island searching for answers.  But that isn't stopping Maximum Family Games from giving the game a new look, this time for Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo may not have had the greatest of years with its 2011 outlook, but 2012 could be an interesting turnaround for them between the 3DS' rising popularity and the prospect of the Wii U, despite its price rumors.  But Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo of Japan, is ready to send the company out of the year on a high note, as he will host a "Nintendo Direct" web conference the day after Christmas.

12.24.11

As you can see, we previously discussed Nintendo 3DS releases with our previously posted Myst story.  But how about a game that people actually wouldn't mind seeing again?  And for that matter, something that's affordable and well worth the money.  Well, you're in luck, as Terry Cavanagh's classic platformer VVVVVV will hit the Nintendo 3DS Shop next week.

The power of Tekken appears to be going strong into 2012, between the forthcoming Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Capcom's Street Fighter x Tekken, and now with Tekken 3D Prime Edition for Nintendo 3DS.  Namco has announced an official release date for the game, as well as some bonuses that'll be packed in with it.

As the Nintendo 3DS library is just now picking up, there's a number of games to check out for this holiday season, among them Sonic Generations, WWE All Stars and, of course, the Mario misadventures that are 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.  However, even though these more popular titles guarantee good times, there's a chance you might miss out on the more smaller, compelling experiences.  Like, say, Nano Assault.

When Namco Bandai released Ace Combat: Assault Horizon for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in October, I thought it was a great new direction for the series, one filled with plenty of adrenaline and excitement, even if the helicopter sequences aren't for everyone's tastes.  But if you prefer the Ace Combat of old, you should check out the recently released 3DS entry, Assault Horizon Legacy.  It does have some stuff in common with the other version, but it's heart is kept firmly in the realm of old-school.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday might be over but the deals for video game devices is still on. Best Buy has the Nintendo 3DS in black, red and aqua blue for $169.99 with a free $50 Best Buy gift card making the net price for the Nintendo 3DS only $119.99.

When we got our hands on Need For Speed: The Run on consoles, we were impressed by its cross-country race set-up and its exciting moments, though we were frustrated by the inclusion of lame-ass quick-time events when you got out of the car.  Oddly enough, the 3DS version of The Run has similar setbacks.  When you’re racing, there’s really quite nothing like it.  But it’s the unnecessary extras stacked on top that get in the way of truly enjoying the ride.

I’m all for an aggressive NASCAR game.  Sure, the realism based ones are okay, but you have to be in the proper mood to go around hundreds of laps without feeding the urge to ram Tony Stewart into the wall.  So it made me happy to play NASCAR Unleashed on the 360 last month, with its simplistic arcade nature and its numerous options.  When I heard there was a version available for Nintendo 3DS, I was curious to see how it fared, imagining car parts flying at the screen in 3D and all sorts of havoc ensuing.  Well, I got the havoc part right, but not in the way I wanted.

Remember that awesome Nintendo 3DS bundle we told you about earlier, with the limited edition black 3DS system with Zelda art and a packaged-in copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D?  Well, it looks like Nintendo of America actually listened to our cries, as the company has announced that it is bringing the system to stores just in time for the Black Friday rush.  And another special bundle is in tow as well.
