We're as much of a fan of James Bond as the next guy who likes his Q gadgets, but we can't help but think what a bummer it is that some of the best films in the series, like Goldeneye and (dare we argue) Octopussy aren't available yet on Blu-Ray format, the way they were meant to be seen.  But MGM rectified that this week at the Consumer Electronics Show when it made an announcement at Panasonic's booth regarding a special collector's edition set, due for release this year.

With CES 2012 just around the corner, the news isn’t good for big electronics giants like Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and Sharp. A sharp slowdown in spending due to continuing economic chaos will cause revenue growth in the global consumer electronics (CE) market to fall short of growth expectations by more than 75 percent this year, according to an IHS iSuppli Consumer Platforms Market Tracker report. CE revenue in 2011 will amount to $357.3 billion, up a scant 1.5 percent from $351.9 billion in 2010, and equivalent to a 77 percent reduction compared to the previous IHS forecast of 6.4 percent growth for the year.

One of the things that has been holding back the adoption of 3D TVs in the home is consumer confusion over competing 3D technologies. That confusion is most rampant when it comes to active shutter 3D glasses and the inability of consumers to use one pair of glasses on different manufacturers’ products. That’s about to change.

U.S. consumers purchased an estimated 1.75 million Blu-ray Disc 3D (BD3D) discs at retail during the format's first 12 months on the market, and brought home another 1.7 million units as part of hardware/software bundling deals, according to the new IHS Screen Digest report entitled “Life in 3D: BD3D's First Year of Sales,” from information and analysis provider IHS. These sales were spurred, in part, thanks to the free PlayStation 3 upgrade that turns any PS3 into a Blu-ray 3D player. The lower cost of 3D TVs from companies like Vizio is also helping sales.

According to IHS iSuppli, the Japan earthquake and tsunami could result in significant shortages of certain components, potentially causing pricing for these devices to increase dramatically. While there are few reports of actual damage at electronic production facilities, impacts on the transportation and power infrastructure will result in disruptions of supply, resulting in the short supply and rising prices. Components impacted will include NAND flash memory, dynamic random access memory (DRAM), microcontrollers, standard logic, liquid-crystal display (LCD) panels, and LCD parts and materials. These devices will impact gamers in everything from memory cards to Nintendo DS devices to HD TVs and LG phones.
