Major League Gaming (MLG) concluded a record-breaking 2011 season tonight at the Pro Circuit National Championships in Providence, Rhode Island. The best players from around the globe squared off in a three-day, double-elimination video game tournament from November 18 through 20th competing for championship glory and more than $600,000 in prizes and stipends. At the end of the intense competition, the top players and teams emerged victorious. One of the top Halo: Reach teams was Believe the Hype and Erick “Snipedown” Wrona talks about pro gaming and MLG in this exclusive video interview below.

When Bungie bid farewell last year with the release of Halo: Reach, that should’ve been the end of the franchise, yes?  Ha, yeah right.  This is a big moneymaker for Microsoft and they weren’t about to let the series go quietly into that good night.  So, along with announcing the forthcoming Halo 4 (and thus opening the door for a new trilogy), the company also confirmed its high-definition remake of the original that started it all, Halo: Combat Evolved.  So, now that it’s here, is it a fond tribute to everything Master Chief, or an insult?

The 2011 MLG Pro Circuit season has been record breaking with the largest prize purse to date, the most epic crowds, and millions tuning in from around the globe to watch the competition Live online.  The competition continues this weekend as top pro players, aspiring amateurs, and thousands of video game fans return to the sunshine state for the Major League Gaming (MLG) Orlando Pro Circuit, marking the seventh time MLG has held an event in Orlando, Florida.  October 14-16, competitors from around the globe will battle in the last Pro Circuit before the 2011 championship for more than $120,000 in prizes playing Blizzard Entertainment’s blockbuster real-time strategy game, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty on PC, the record-setting Call of Duty: Black Ops on PlayStation 3, and the popular Halo: Reach on Xbox 360.

LOS ANGELES – Red Bull expanded its second pro gaming LAN by inviting StarCraft II players to its Santa Monica studio, in addition to its Halo: Reach gamers. At the three-day event, the Red Bull Gaming roster consisted of two of its most accomplished and upcoming players including three-time national championship winner, Dave “Walshy” Walsh, Ian “Enable” Wyatt, Clete “Assault” LoRusso, Mike “Flamesword” Chaves, and Aaron “Ace” Elam. Joining the line-up at the Red Bull LAN were Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, Austin “Mikwen” McCleary, Brett “Naded” Leonard, Justin “Pistola” Deese, Jason “Lunchbox” Brown, Justin “Roy” Brown, and Tom “Ogre2” Ryan. For the first time ever, players of Blizzard Entertainment's popular real-time strategy game StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will come from around the world to join an all star Halo: Reach line-up at the next Red Bull LAN in Santa Monica, California from September 30 – October 2. Twelve of the world’s best StarCraft II players (four from each of the game’s races – Terran, Protoss, and Zerg) will join three of the league’s most dominant Halo: Reach teams in one of competitive gaming’s most sought-after training programs. For 10 hours each day over three days, some of the sharpest minds and fastest fingers in the world will gather at an innovative training facility developed by Red Bull to broaden their skills and prepare for their upcoming professional gaming competitions.

Major League Gaming (MLG) experienced an all-time high as 138,000 peak concurrent online stream viewers watched the Raleigh Pro Circuit competition held August 26-28, breaking previous MLG records. Viewers from 173 countries watched the live streams and more than 3 million hours of video were consumed throughout the weekend. Working with Streamworks, MLG was able to deliver uninterrupted 720p high definition, high-quality video streams of the  competition  despite Hurricane Irene. Streamworks will continue to work with MLG to deliver live and on-demand coverage of all 2011 and 2012 Pro Circuit competitions.

SAN FRANCISCO, California - The Game Audio Network Guild (G.A.N.G.), the non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and recognition of game audio, awarded the winners of the 9th Annual G.A.N.G. Awards held at the 25th Annual Game Developers Conference  (GDC 2011). Red Dead Redemption, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Halo: Reach took home prizes. During a Microsoft earnings call, the company announced that Halo: Reach generated $350 million during the first 16 days of launch worldwide. The game earned $200 million in its first 24 hours. While Microsoft did not specify the number of units sold in the first 16 days, the game likely topped 5 million copies factoring in the three different price points for special editions of the new title. What started off as a very good year has slowed down, despite the release of great blockbuster games. According to the NPG Group,U.S. retail sales of game hardware, software and accessories fell 8 percent in September to $1.2 billion. The one bright spot was Microsoft’s Halo 3, which topped all game sales for the month and helped drive Xbox 360 hardware.

When it comes to sci-fi, actor Nathan Fillion has a huge following. Although he’s gone mainstream as Richard Castle in the ABC hit TV series “Castle,” fans still know him from his work as Captain Malcolm Reynolds on Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” and the big screen incarnation Serenity. The Christmas shopping season has officially kicked off for 2010. Microsoft announced that early sales of Bungie’s Halo: Reach have generated $200 million in the first 24 hours of sale.The amount broke the previous record of Halo 3, which held $170 million in sales in the 24 hours in 2007.

Tor Books, an imprint of Tom Doherty Associates, LLC—the largest publisher of science fiction in the world is excited to announce that Karen Traviss, who has penned number one bestselling novels in the Star Wars universe, as well as bestselling novels for the Gears of War franchise, will be writing the successor novel to Halo: Ghosts of Onyx in the first part of a multi-book deal to explore the Halo Universe in the wake of the final events of Halo 3. Halo novels published by Tor have sold over a million combined copies to date, and in 2010 Tor will also publish the first in a new Halo trilogy by science fiction icon Greg Bear. The highly-anticipated Xbox 360 video game “Halo: Reach” is scheduled to release September 14.

Bungie, the developer of blockbuster game franchises including Halo, Myth and Marathon, and Activision have entered into an exclusive 10-year partnership to bring Bungie’s next big action game universe to market. Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and devices. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
