Activision watched as Skylanders catapulted to the top of the video game and toy charts for 2011. The game publisher will showcase Skylanders Giants at San Diego Comic-Con 2012. The new game builds upon the breakthrough fundamentals of the Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure—merging the physical and virtual realms with an innovative line of cross-platform toys with “brains,” which players everywhere can magically bring to life in the world of Skylands.  Using the mystical Portal of Power, players once again lead a team of heroic Skylanders in a new adventure to save their world. Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure adds yet another imaginative dimension to kids’ social play with the beta launch of Skylanders Spyro’s Universe, a vast virtual world for kids to engage with Skylanders characters and their fellow players. Activision, which has had tremendous success with its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 game’s $1 billion haul this fall, is investing in its E-rated family game.

According to Kids and Gaming 2011, the latest report from leading market research company, The NPD Group, since 2009, the population growth of kids ages 2-17 increased 1.54 percent in the U.S., while the gaming population of that age group has grown 12.68 percent. This growth in kids’ gaming population is far outpacing the growth experienced by the population of 2-17 year olds in the country.

Activision is sticking with what works at E3 2011, focusing on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and its companion online service, Call of Duty Eliteat its booth. The game maker also has new Marvel video games for Spider-Man and X-Men fans, as well as Prototype 2 for core gamers. And for the kids, there’s Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventures (video shown below).
