Sonic the Hedgehog has been around for years now, entertaining us with his platforming adventures on the Genesis before moving on to other platforms and, eventually, multi-system success on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.  But the ride hasn’t always been the greatest with him, thanks to lackluster efforts since Sonic Unleashed (seriously…a Werehog) and the iffy next-gen debut of Sonic the Hedgehog, where he fell for a…human girl.  Ick.  Anyway, that said, he did have some great games over the years…so why not count down the best?

Kart racers are usually a dime a dozen, especially back in the old days, when it seemed like every gaming company wanted to make its own version to capitalize on the popularity of the Mario Kart games.  But Sega did it quite effectively several months back with Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, a smorgasbord of racing goodness stemming multiple characters and tracks inspired by various Sega classics, including the House of the Dead, Samba de Amigo and more.  The formula worked extremely well for both the company and players, so it should be no surprise that the long-rumored sequel was finally announced today.

Say what you will about how much he's dragged his feet in the past with less-than-epic adventures, but Sonic is making a comeback for the better.  He's just come off a great new game with Sonic Generations, and later this year, he'll be hitting the open road yet again in the yet-to-be-confirmed Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing 2.  In between those two releases, he'll wrap up his Sonic the Hedgehog 4 saga with Episode 2, set to release next month for Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.

Sega’s downloadable game slate is looking incredible.  We certainly won’t lie.  Along with a revamped version of Jet Set Radio, the recently released House of the Dead 4, the upcoming original game Hell Yeah (more on that shortly) and the return of Sonic the Hedgehog (part four, episode two), Sega has a lot of genres covered.  You can count fighting in there as well, as the company is bringing Virtua Fighter 5 back to market with the upcoming expansion Final Showdown, set for release on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.

Once upon a time, we had game consoles that didn’t connect to the Internet, provide online global rankings or even go “above and beyond” when it came to graphics.  This was during the heyday of the Sega Genesis, a console that, from the early 90’s onward, dominated the game universe for some time.  Kudos to Sega for not only making a capable game console, but also a library to back it up, ranging from action games to sports titles to unique fare like Gunstar Heroes and Toejam and Earl.  If you somehow missed out on this generation, don’t fret, because Sega is bringing it to yet another platform.

SAN FRANCISCO – Nintendo had a strong showing at the Game Developers Conference (GDC 2012). The game maker abandoned Wii U for Nintendo 3DS and featured some brand new games. On display and playable was Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, Mario Tennis and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Once upon a time, fighting game giants refused to work with one another, instead competing for attention in the arcades with their own individual products.  But then someone got the crazy notion, “Hey, we should team up our franchises and see what comes up.”  And thus, crossovers was born.  Many companies have done it, including Capcom and SNK with their Capcom vs. SNK games, respectively, and soon Street Fighter x Tekken will be knocking around the streets, set for a release tomorrow.  But are you possibly ready for…Sega versus Tecmo?

BARCELONA -- On the first day of Mobile World Congress here in Barcelona, SEGA showed Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time on a tablet powered by NVIDIA's quad core Tegra 3. Called Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Episode II, the new mobile game will launch some time in the Spring this year. It will come out first exclusively for NVIDIA Tegra-powered smartphones and tablets in NVIDIA's Tegra Zone before rolling out onto other Android devices after. We got a first hand look at the blue wonder doing his thing on the Tegra 3-powered Asus Transformer Prime tablet in this exclusive video.

If something’s good enough, you know someone will bring it back in one form or another.  For Sega, this is a common business practice, as it’s been bringing back several of its old-school franchise to the current game scene, in an effort to generate newfound success.  This includes a number of resurrected Dreamcast classics, along with the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and Virtua Fighter, which will come back this summer with Final Showdown on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.  Now another big game is coming back, and Professor K fans will want to listen up…

It’s inevitable.  Ever since the success of their first outing a few years ago, Sega’s Sonic and Nintendo’s Mario have managed to shake off their whole 16-bit rivalry in favor of collaborative sporting efforts, usually revolving around the Olympic games.  Like clockwork, just in time to celebrate the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Sega has released yet another compilation featuring the duo, as well as their respective casts, in 50 various mini-game sporting events.  It sounds like a fun time.  Unfortunately, for the most part, it isn’t.

There’s nothing wrong with trying to design a platformer that appeals to the old school.  A lot of us grew up playing games on the NES, SNES or some older system, and fondly remember the good ol’ days where the likes of Mario and Sonic truly got their start.  But even with the boldest original idea, your platformer doesn’t stand a chance if the gameplay isn’t solid enough.  There are countless Genesis games we can easily point out that suffer from this issue.  And, sadly, Crocodile Entertainment’s Zack Zero is stuck right alongside them.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a splendid 2011.  There, we said it.  But he really has.  Between Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing for mobile platforms, the awesome Sonic Generations and the surprising return of Sonic CD in downloadable format, Sega really brought him back to, ahem, speed.  And he's not slowing down in 2012, as the company has announced the follow-up to his original Sonic the Hedgehog 4 adventure.

To be quite honest, Sonic CD didn’t get a fair shake when it came out for the Sega CD nearly 20 years ago.  The platform itself was questionable between the stupid-ass games that came out for it, and a few hardcore fans were miffed that the excellent Japanese soundtrack was replaced by mostly bland rock tunes.  But leave it to Sega to validate its long-forgotten classic by giving it the widespread release it deserves across multiple platforms.  Along with Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, the game has also found a home on iOS devices – and, hold your horses, it’s good.

As the Nintendo 3DS library is just now picking up, there's a number of games to check out for this holiday season, among them Sonic Generations, WWE All Stars and, of course, the Mario misadventures that are 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.  However, even though these more popular titles guarantee good times, there's a chance you might miss out on the more smaller, compelling experiences.  Like, say, Nano Assault.

12.13.11

Sega surprised a lot of folks when it brought back its sleeper hit Sonic the Hedgehog CD (also known as just Sonic CD, duh) for digital release, unveiling it a few months back at the Penny Arcade Expo and reintroducing the world to a long-lost favorite.  But now it's shocked us again, as it's JUST announced that the game will be out in time for the holidays.  And it's throwing in some extra stuff as well -- including a VERY reasonable price.

OK, for the most part, Sonic the Hedgehog games for this generation have sucked.  While Sonic Colors wasn't half bad, the other games, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Unleashed, left a bad taste in our mouths.  Even the promising 2-D Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 couldn't turn the tide in his favor.  But now it looks like that will all wash away next week when Sonic Generations releases.  Sega and Sonic Team are relying on the classic flavor of the series, while still making the gameplay fans can easily relate to.

In celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary and his upcoming videogame, Sonic Generations, Sega has teamed up with action sports event producer ASA Entertainment for Sonic Generations of Skate. The event will feature three generations of professional skaters competing throughout the Sonic-themed day. On Saturday, October 22, Sonic and skateboarding fans will descend on Venice Beach, California (on the basketball courts near Muscle Beach), the iconic location where performance skateboarding planted its roots. Viewers at home will also be able to catch all the action on Fox Sports Network on Friday, November 25th.

If there's one thing Sega is no stranger to, it's revisiting classic licenses in a whole new light.  These next few weeks alone, we'll be seeing revamped versions of House of the Dead and Sonic the Hedgehog, in ways that both fans and newcomers can appreciate.  And later this month also marks the return of an arcade racing pioneer -- Daytona USA.

10.11.11

Sega's attempts to bring back Sonic the Hedgehog in a whole new light have been bungled at best.  Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 was all right, but a bit too short considering its $15 price tag and large amount of hype.  The original Sonic the Hedgehog rebirth was unquestionably bad, due to poor platforming segments and a rather questionable relationship with a human girl.  And Sonic Unleashed didn't do the brand any favors, thanks to an annoying new character and Sonic's poor Were-hog stages.  But now, this year, it looks like Sega's finally getting it right, simply by going back to basics.

Sega continues its year-long celebration of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary. The game publisher had a full lineup of titles at PAX Prime 2011 in Seattle. Located at Booth 3625 on the show floor, the company had a pair of new Sonic games playable -- Sonic Generations, which is the first 3D Sonic game, and Sonic CD.

You don't often hear about gangbusters announcements happening at an evening like the Penny Arcade Expo, as they're usually saved for the likes of GamesCom or Electronic Entertainment Expo.  But there are those smaller ones that still make a significant dent, like the return of Duke Nukem Forever, which was a highlight from last year.  This year marks the return of a Sega favorite, Sonic CD, which is rumored to be making an appearance at the company's booth in downloadable form, on Xbox Live Arcade.  It's big news -- and a good second chance for a game that deserves one.

The summer is the season that everyone looks forward to... except gamers. Summertime has a reputation of being the worst time to be a gamer, as little to no quality games come out during this 90-day period. The main conception is that everyone will be spending a lot of their time on vacation, whether at the beach or perhaps in another part of the world. Luckily, that period of time is coming to an end as plenty of quality games are coming out, starting with Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Seeing characters do guest appearances in cross-over games is becoming more of a common theme these days, and Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario are no strangers to that.  After years of fighting on their separate consoles, Sega and Nintendo settled their differences, working on joint projects that included both characters in the Olympic Games series, as well as Super Smash Bros. Brawl.  Now Sonic will once again be stopping by Mario's world, this time in one of his biggest titles to date.
