Things aren’t looking good over at the Walt Disney Company’s video game division. Disney Interactive Studios has reportedly laid off half of its 700 employees this week amidst a massive redirection of game development. Despite the success of Warren Spector’s Junction Point game, Epic Mickey, the studio is refocusing its effort in the burgeoning casual online gaming space. Games like TRON: Evolution and Tangled failed to generate blockbuster sales. The company is still trying to right its ship after spending $763 million to purchase casual gaming site Playdom.

Although Walt Disney Studios’ TRON: Legacy has become a global box office smash, Disney Interactive Studios’ TRON: Evolution video games have not been able to capitalize on that success. Last year, Ubisoft’s James Cameron’s AVATAR: The Game, also had trouble reaching a mainstream audience. But for Disney, the TRON game has resulted in the closure of the Vancouver game studio, Propaganda Games. Disney already shut down production of the new Pirate of the Caribbean role-playing game last October, which was originally slated to ship this summer in tandem with the new 3D film, Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides.

While TRON: Legacy is not breaking box office records like James Cameron’s AVATAR did heading into 2010, Disney’s 3D sequel is holding strong in 2011. His Western, True Grit, has become Joel and Ethan Coen’s biggest movie ever, blowing past the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men with $86.8 million. Although Walt Disney Studio’s TRON: Legacy didn’t have the opening weekend of James Cameron’s AVATAR, the 3D spectacle – which cost half as much as last December’s blockbuster – did achieve the high score at the box office. TRON: Legacy powered up with $43.6 million in its first three days in the U.S. Many don’t remember that the original film, which also starred Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges, was a box office failure the summer of 1982. Generations of fans who waited over 28 years to see Walt Disney Studio’s TRON return to the big screen were eager to catch the film early. TRON: Legacy took in $3.5 million in its midnight screenings around the U.S., which was on par with James Cameron’s AVATAR. The movie’s total Friday box office haul was $18 million. The original movie’s entire theatrical run during the summer of 1982, which included movies like Steven Spielberg’s E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, was $33 million. This bodes well for Disney Interactive Studio's TRON: Evolution games. The creator of the TRON universe, Steven Lisberger, talks about the new film in this exclusive video interview.
