Following last week's surprise price drop on the PlayStation 3 at GamesCom, many analysts were looking Microsoft's way to see what its next move would be with the Xbox 360.  But if you're expecting the company to immediately follow suit to keep up Sony, you might have another thing coming.  It looks like Microsoft is planning to push software -- and some hardware -- rather than a price drop.  A damaging move, or a smart strategy?

SAN FRANCISCO, California --Dessault Systèmes used GDC 2011 to demonstrate that users of 3DVIA Scenes, a free online 3D publishing application, can share their creations in fully immersive stereoscopic 3D. With this update, over 230,000 3DVIA.com content creators can interact inside their applications online or through PC-connected TVs using anaglyph (red/blue), side-by-side, line-by-line or checkerboard-capable 3D glasses.

 COLOGNE -- Over 1,500 game professionals representing more than 45 different countries congregated at the Cologne Congress Center East in Cologne, Germany for three days of learning, networking, and inspiration at Game Developers Conference Europe 2010 (GDC Europe). Thanks to a strong lineup of speakers, ranging from famed game developer Warren Spector of Disney’s Junction Point, to Hermen Hulst of Guerilla Games, the show presented an esteemed selection of 170 European and international speakers, a total of 40 exhibitors and sponsors and 275 media representatives covering game development on PC, social networking sites, consoles and mobile platforms. GDC Europe returns to Cologne, Germany on August 15-17, 2011.

Having built a solid fan base with its first collaboration, “Star Wars Galaxies,” Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and LucasArts have teamed up again for another online vid game experience. This one, “Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures” (www.CloneWarsAdventures.com), is based on Lucasfilm’s hit animated television series that airs on Cartoon Network. The free-to-play game is focused on the growing family online vid game audience.

LOS ANGELES -- In tandem with E3 2010, where Sony and Nintendo stole the show with new PlayStation 3 3D games and a robust line-up of Nintendo 3DS stereoscopic games, new research shows that consumers are game for 3D. According to Interpret’s new report, “3D State of Union: Are Consumers Ready?” marketing campaigns of TV manufacturers and product demos at retail have vetted consumer interest in 3D technologies-5% of heads of households stated that they are “definitely interested” in purchasing a 3D TV in the next 12 months, and another 8% are “probably interested.”

After a two-year hiatus to travel to the International Space Station, work on a film documentary, ignite a personal rapid transit initiative, and wrap up post-flight experiments and speaking engagements, veteran game designer, Richard Garriott, is returning to the video game industry where he has been a fixture for more than 30 years – this time with a broad-based new social media company called Portalarium. Garriott is best known for his award-winning Ultima Series (ORIGIN/Electronic Arts) of fantasy role playing games and Ultima Online, the first commercially successful massively multiplayer online game released in 1997 and still operating today.
