Things are looking up for consumer electronics, thanks to the success of new tablets like the Samsung Nexus and new Smart TVs from Vizio and others. The consumer electronics (CE) industry will see stronger than anticipated growth in 2012, according to the semi-annual industry forecast released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The overall CE industry will grow an estimated 5.9 percent in the U.S. this year, two points higher than previously projected in January.

Smart TV manufacturers are hoping that the popularity of apps with smartphone and tablet users makes its way to the living room. Manufacturers and retailers are selling more and more televisions preloaded with Internet-connected functionality, frequently referred to as Smart TVs. Samsung Electronics in the fourth quarter of 2011 solidified its leadership of the U.S. liquid-crystal display (LCD) market, as its share of unit shipments reached a record high, according to the IHS iSuppli Television Systems Service at information and analytics provider IHS. During the final three months of 2011, Samsung accounted for nearly one-quarter of U.S. LCD TV shipments, at 23.6 percent. This represented the largest share of the market ever posted by Samsung on a quarterly basis, and allowed the South Korean electronics giant to pad its lead over No.2 brand VIZIO Inc. of Irvine, Calif.

In what appears to be a decisive turning point, U.S. flat-panel TV shipments are projected to dip for the first time on an annual basis this year, ending an unbroken string of growth since the market began. Shipments in 2012 of flat-panel TVs into the American market are forecast to decline to 37.1 million units, down 5 percent from 39.1 million units in 2011, according to an IHS iSuppli U.S. TV Market Tracker report from information and analytics provider IHS. Only last year, shipments had inched up 1 percent from 38.6 million units in 2010. Watching television shows in 3D has become a regular activity for the majority of 3DTV owners, according to the latest research from the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service. According to the report, “3DTVs: Buying Intentions and Early Adopter Feedback,” two-thirds of 3DTV owners across the US and Europe are watching at least one show in 3D on a weekly basis. Forty-one percent of 3DTV owners claim to be watching shows in 3D at least once a day or several times a day.

U.S. consumers purchased an estimated 1.75 million Blu-ray Disc 3D (BD3D) discs at retail during the format's first 12 months on the market, and brought home another 1.7 million units as part of hardware/software bundling deals, according to the new IHS Screen Digest report entitled “Life in 3D: BD3D's First Year of Sales,” from information and analysis provider IHS. These sales were spurred, in part, thanks to the free PlayStation 3 upgrade that turns any PS3 into a Blu-ray 3D player. The lower cost of 3D TVs from companies like Vizio is also helping sales.

When Nintendo launches its first high definition video game console, Wii U, next year, game developers will be able to make stereoscopic 3D games for all three major consoles for the first time. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed that from a technology standpoint, gamers who connect Wii U to a 3D TV will be able to experience 3D gaming. However, Iwata said 3D gaming is not an area that Nintendo is focusing on in the console space.

LAS VEGAS (CES) – OnLive and Vizio today announced that OnLive will be available on Vizio’s brand-new VIA Plus HDTVs and Blu-ray players as well as Vizio’s VIA tablet  and VIA smartphone that it is introducing here a few days before CES. The cloud gaming service will support full 1080P 1920 x 1080 HD resolutions wirh stereoscopic 3D and SRS 5.1 surround sound support as well as work with OnLive’s low latency wireless game pads, which are based on the new IEEE 802.15.4 wireless standard. OnLive runs on Vizio’s Internet Apps platform which will be available across all four Vizio VIA product lines.
