When Nintendo presented its big showcase last year before the Electronic Entertainment Expo took place, it shocked the world with the announcement of the Wii U, a new game console that would take advantage of an innovative new touch screen controller.  However, when it came to hitting the floor and seeing the Wii U in action, most people think it came up a bit short, despite the interesting presentations.  This time around, Nintendo has a chance to really show attendees what their next-gen system is made of.  So how can they capitalize?  We’ve got a few ideas…

Ahhh, the Electronic Entertainment Expo.  Every year, game companies show off their best wares at the event.  Some are clearly anticipated from previous announcements, while others are huge surprises that come out of left field.  Konami is no exception to this rule, as they’ve dominated E3 in the past with announcements such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.  But even we’re left to wonder just what the company will announce at this year’s expo, as they’re planning a huge announcement.  That won’t stop us from guessing, though…

Electronic Arts never fails to showcase a strong array of third-party titles for both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as well as other consoles each year they attend E3.  Last year was a huge highlight between such games as SSX and Mass Effect 3, but what does the company have to lean on this year?  Well, besides big sports hits like Madden NFL 13 and the upcoming Overstrike from Insomniac Games, we’ve got a few ideas as to what the company should officially announce at the show.  With that, here are our suggestions…

Every year, video game companies go all out at one specific event – the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which takes place every year in Los Angeles around June.  Here, companies like to show off what lies ahead in the next twelve to fifteen months, big projects, small uprisings, little advancements to their hardware…that sort of thing.  We’ve been to a lot of shows now, and they’ve been impressive, but E3 2012 should be an even bigger year, thanks to what the companies are bringing.

It’s really weird how some of these April Fools jokes are turning into actual products, isn’t it?  Take a look at the iCade, a miniature iPad arcade cabinet that was first shown as an April Fools joke, but has since become a best-selling accessory for the market.  Now, THQ has confirmed yet another April Fools gag that’s becoming a reality, one that introduces a whole new way to play through the world of Steelport in Saints Row: The Third.

Kart racers are usually a dime a dozen, especially back in the old days, when it seemed like every gaming company wanted to make its own version to capitalize on the popularity of the Mario Kart games.  But Sega did it quite effectively several months back with Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, a smorgasbord of racing goodness stemming multiple characters and tracks inspired by various Sega classics, including the House of the Dead, Samba de Amigo and more.  The formula worked extremely well for both the company and players, so it should be no surprise that the long-rumored sequel was finally announced today.

Set against the backdrop of the American Revolution in the late 18th century, Assassin’s Creed III introduces a new hero, Ratohnhaké:ton, of Native American and English heritage. Adopting the name Connor, he becomes the new voice for justice in the ancient war between the Assassins and Templars. Players become an Assassin in the war for liberty against ruthless tyranny in the most stylized and fluid combat experiences in the franchise to date. Assassin’s Creed III spans the Revolutionary War, taking gamers from the vibrant, untamed frontier to bustling colonial towns and the intense, chaotic battlefields where George Washington’s Continental Army clashed with the imposing British Army. Ubisoft Producer Alex Hutchinson talks about the new game in this exclusive video interview below.

The original Darksiders was a triumph for the newly founded (at the time) Vigil Games, headed up by comic book universe master Joe Maduriera (aka “Joe Mad”), telling a tale revolving around the apocalypse but making it kick-ass enough that fans of action games could truly appreciate it.  Granted, having Mark Hamill on board for voice acting didn’t hurt either.  So for the sequel, Darksiders II, the team had an even bigger task ahead, not only taking the game in a whole new direction, but introducing an unlikely hero – fellow Horseman Death – in the mix.  We recently gave the game a go with a hands-on session hosted by THQ, just to get an idea what it’s like.

Once upon a time, fighting game giants refused to work with one another, instead competing for attention in the arcades with their own individual products.  But then someone got the crazy notion, “Hey, we should team up our franchises and see what comes up.”  And thus, crossovers was born.  Many companies have done it, including Capcom and SNK with their Capcom vs. SNK games, respectively, and soon Street Fighter x Tekken will be knocking around the streets, set for a release tomorrow.  But are you possibly ready for…Sega versus Tecmo?

While the game developer was exploring the Italian Renaissance in its latest Assassin’s Creed games, Ubisoft had a team working for the last three years on the American Revolution-set Assassin’s Creed III. The first screenshots of the much-anticipated big game of 2012, which ships October 30, 2012, can be seen below.

There’s no question we’re on a fever pitch for the new Marvel’s The Avengers film.  How could you not be?  Between Robert Downey Jr. doing his slick Iron Man thing, Samuel L. Jackson playing the baddest Nick Fury on the planet, and the return of the Hulk (and not the Ed Norton Hulk), it’s crazy how much anticipation is going into it.  Which leads us to wonder…why is there not an Avengers video game that ties in with the film?

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise has explored the Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance. The latest game in the franchise is sticking closer to home. Assassin’s Creed III has been confirmed by the game maker to be set during the American Revolution. This offers a ripe area of exploration that hasn’t been visited in gaming save for an obscure RTS game, American Revolution: Battle for Freedom.

Wedbush Morgan Securities videogame analyst Michael Pachter is always good for stirring up controversy with his opinions. Pachter was the keynote speaker for the fourth annual Ayzenberg A-List Summit in San Francisco, where he said Nintendo was in disarray and Electronic Arts is f*cked in social games. Watch the question and answer part of his speech in the exclusive video below.

Penny Arcade continues to expand. With PAX East coming up in April in Boston and PAX Prime set for later this year in Seattle, the comics are now helping educate consumers about game ratings. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has unveiled a new PSA campaign featuring artwork designed by the creators of the hugely popular video game webcomic Penny Arcade. The three-part national print and online campaign features caricatures based upon real parents and gamers, each of whom conveys a unique perspective about the ESRB ratings and tools like rating summaries and the ESRB mobile app. These ads will start appearing this spring in parent-focused and game enthusiast media outlets nationwide and can be viewed here.

In its early days, THQ was best known as a kids game maker working with brands from Nickelodeon and Disney based on Hollywood TV shows and movies. But the Hollywood licensing business has dried up with the higher costs of development and the advances of smartphones and tablets (where those licenses still thrive). THQ isn’t exiting the games business, as had been rumored a few weeks ago. Instead, the game company is exiting the kids games business in favor of successful franchises like Saints Row.

While Nintendo remains a formidable force in the game industry, the company has seen better days, recently posting a net loss in its business and trying to figure out its next move with the Wii U, and whether a renaming of the system is necessary or not.  That said, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata remained confident in the future of the company business, and (finally) introduced a dedicated gaming network coming soon from the company, one that should offer simplicity to those picking up a Nintendo 3DS or, later this year, a Wii U.

When Darksiders came out from THQ a couple of years back, it introduced the video game realm to Vigil Studios, a team headed up by creative director (and comic book artist) Joe Madureira.  It also left quite an impact on action gamers, one that was right up there with the God of War games.  Now the team is back at work on the highly anticipated sequel, and this time around, a different horseman is stepping up on a quest of his own.

We do love ourselves a good Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game.  Just ask us how many countless hours we spent on Xbox Live Arcade playing the original arcade game, beating the crap out of Shredder's thugs while having some laughs with friends.  Well, another kind of good game may just be right around the corner, as Rocksteady Studios, the team behind Batman: Arkham Asylum and its Arkham City sequel, could be working on an all new game featuring the New York-based quartet.

Let's make it clear right now -- the Consumer Electronics Show isn't really about video games.  Sure, they definitely have a place in the consumer electronic world when it comes to entertainment, but the show is more focused on the technological side, with gadgets, TV's and other high-priced technology that's really out there.  But some game companies managed to show up anyway and show off their wares, so we've got the wrap-up on what we saw, and whether it was really worth it.  Let's get started...
